Plant Hoppers on Parade

These little guys were part of a rather heavy infestation on an ornamental shrub. They’re very mobile, but can be ‘herded’ into a more suitable pose by pushing a finger towards them in the direction you want them to go. They’ll skitter away from your finger, then stop. If you’re careful enough with your camera movement, they will stay there - posing. You need to click on the download to see the tiny waxy filaments newly forming in the body pores. These filaments will often cover the body in a white flocculence.

I find that soaking beans before cooking them, minimizes flocculence.... <Bazinga!>

But to your plant hoppers... I've never seen these. What are the approximate sizes and what are they called?

These are immature plant hoppers, probably in the infraorder Fulgoroidea. These still have some growing to do and were about 4-5 mm long.

I'm going to try them again in a couple of weeks. They should have tons more wax by then.

I'm like Napabob. I don't think I've ever seen these, not even in pictures. Another really weird critter and of course... Tinusbum sees them all of the time!

I have never seen these either. What interesting insects and as usual you have done an excellent job with the photography.

These little guys are relatively common, but you almost have to be looking for them. They're often on smaller twigs of bushes, and even when they're small have that characteristic waxy filamentous 'bloom' that flows out of ducts at the posterior. As I said earlier, I plan to get some pics of this same infestation exactly two weeks after I took these.
