Im setting up my website prices and wondering what all the ones in the know think about prices. I will be offering canvas ready to hang photos and digital transfer options. Now if a A3 12x17 inch for e.g canvas costs me $109 is it usually the case to add 100% plus shipping? Now if the canvas costs the customer around $220 plus shipping what should I charge for a digital transfer? Ive seen other websites that charge around $600 for a print and others just pittance. What do you think is reasonable without ripping people off but at the same time make what its worth as the author of the work. Now I know some of you will probably say just charge what you think you should set up as YOUR price and what YOU think its worth but just want to get some ideas!

Pricing photos is dependent on "how good you are" and who you are appealing too....period

I sell youth sports images to parents (high school sports)......parents are inclined to buy good images of their kids but the prices are very very reasonable.

I have a friend that does landscape images, his prices are multiples of mine and he makes a fortune selling them. But they are good. In fact you can go to his site, follow his images and see how many he as sold of each.

My online sales represent a good percentage but not the largest percentage of my income.....out of my work in the highschools......we will do 200 senior shoots this year - most of those this summer - and 5 weddings (we limit weddings to 7 yearly from May through July). The majority of our weddings and all come from our work with the high schools.

But Dave Allen.....all he does is travel South and North Carolina photographing landscapes. I have another friend Richard Baranabe who does the same as Dave but he has branched out into doing workshops.

My formula? Material and shipping costs with 10% - 20% markup, plus charge for time spent on photo.

For example a photo taken specifically for a client I figure my time at $30.00 per hour (including post production work), and for an image from a gallery I charge $25.00 for the photo, then add time spent on the ordering process. When taking orders, have an idea of the costs involved and give a client a firm price. Stick to it; changing a price upward will lose you a client, lowering it will set a precedent that you are easy to haggle down. If you keep notes you can refine your pricing structure by looking back at what shorted you.

For $600 of that sized print it better be one hell of a photo!! I sell out of a gallery and charge $25 for a glossy or matt print in 8x11,1/2 format. They are welcome to have it on canvas or what ever they want---I deal with WHCC printing and add 25% plus shipping. If they want the 8x11 matted and framed I have nice black frames with white matting that I will throw in for $25 so for the completed 8x11, matted and framed you're looking at $50. My main income for photography is shooting for the newspaper which I get $50 per job---some take 20 minutes and some take 2 hours which many times is totally up to me. If I'm shooting football and it's a good game I'll stay for the entire game---on the other hand if it's a blowout in the 1st quarter I'm out of there. If my gallery prints sell and they do that's fine if they don't after about a month I rotate them through and try again in about 6 months. I don't haggle but I will barter......

NICE black frame with white matting $11.95. My cost for print if sent out $2.99, total investment by me is $15, $35 profit and customer pays for shipping if I send it out as I'm starting to turn to because printing my own is just getting too costly. Like I said I don't make a living doing this but it all goes into the cookie jar for my next lens---life is good.......
