D3 Long Exsposure Noise Reduction

I'm getting into nightime long exposure photography. Capturing foreground with flashlight for a few seconds then the remaining shutter time (approx 25 seconds ISO 3200 with apeture 2.8) to capture stars in the back ground. First attempts failed with too much noise. I had NR off. I plan on another attempt this weekend. Obviously with NR on. Any advice beyond this would be appreciated. I am shooting a 14mm 2.8 for a lens.

1. What ISO are you using? UPDATE: Sorry, i missed that; shoot slower.
2. Are you completely away from ALL ambient lighting?
3. Can you please post some samples from both sessions? Remember to check "store original" so we can enlarge them after download for better viewing of details. Also, make sure the pictures you download have full meta data stored with them. Thank you.

With such a long exposure on a tripod, the high ISO is not really needed. Try it at 100 ISO and see how it works for you. I do not like the High ISO or Long Exposure Noise Reductions as they cause long record times and make your camera useless while processing. A 30 second exposure will leave your camera useless for that same 30 seconds while it is doing the noise reduction function.

Good question, my only advice for you would be to take the background photo first with flash, then do your long exposure of the stars for the second shot, using a tripod for both. Lower your ISO and blend the two shots together in Photoshop.

Yes I do, thank you for the correction. It is so confusing dealing with layers yet alone life.

I use the D3s for night sky photo with ISO 1200 - 2400 No High ISO or Long Exposure Noise Reduction Turned on. Then Post Process in LR and PS

I love this shot. Reminds me of the bridge on the painting "The Scream."

Tax time again?

Ok, here is the second attempt. Only glitch other than quality was I shot it JPEG. I usually shoot raw but I had a issue. Iso 1250 F3.5 17.5 sec shutter. I sharpened the house slightly using Elements. I thought the house would be sharper without touchups. On this particular image I think I had NR off. Any advice is appreciated.
The second picture seemed to need less sharpening. I was closer but other than that things were the same.
