A while back, I asked for recomindations on things to see and do in England and Scotland. I had so much help from you hogs, and now i have another request. I am in the middle of planning the trip of my life time, and decided to add Ireland(which was my original intent) . Anyone have "must see" places there for me?

Clifden in Connemara - the trip from Galway to Clifden has some of the most beautiful lakes and scenery.

Galway itself is also a go to town - great shops, restaurants and lots of colour and local character ( and characters ).

Clifden has 19 bars in 2 streets in town centre and great craic most nights.

On the road from Clifden to Westport, County Mayo you should visit Kylemore Abbey ( pic attached )

Cong, small town in County Mayo which was featured in the John Wayne film ' The Quiet Man ' .

Also Blarney Castle, just outside of Cork - to kiss the famous Blarney Stone.

Dingle Bay where Ryan's Daughter was made and you can go out in a boat and see Fungi the dolphin who has resided there for over 20 years.

Muckross Castle in Kilarney is also worth a visit.

And, for the religious, Knock to visit the famous church.

And that's just for starters!!

Don't eat the food. Really. It's horrible. And I like blood sausage - but the food in Ireland is pathetic.

Even in the good restaurants.

You are welcome. The food is not as bad as has been stated - we struggled some as vegetarians but found some good meals after searching around - the soup in Ireland is awesome.

You can exist on Guinness alone as it is a food and " Good For You "as the Irish will say!!!

I'm not that interested in the food, but I guess I do have to eat . Maybe just make sandwiches in my room. But the Guinness is intriguing. Between the Scotch in Scotland, and the Guinness in Ireland, I will never be the same. And whatever they drink in England.

Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland
Mizen Head Bridge in southwest Ireland
Aren Islands off Galway bay
Cobb in Southern Ireland (Last port of call for the Titanic)
Cliffs of Moher near Galway
Blarney Castle
Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula
Trinity College and the Trinity College Library in Dublin
Temple Bar area of Dublin
Guinness Stores and Jameson Distillery in Dublin
Old Post Office in Dublin
Newgrange - County Meath - Older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge from 3200 BC

Stay in Bed and Breakfast Locations, of which there are plenty, to get a flavor of the people - who are terrific and friendly.

How does one know if it is a good restaurant?

Their food gets a bad rap...Its not Gourmet, but I didn't find anything objectionable in either of my two trips there. Make your own judgement....they focus a lot on Salmon....and of course potato dishes.

Also try and find a pub that is having a session...Listening to real Irish play real Irish music is a treat you should not miss.

Thank you. That is exactly what I want. I want to mingle, hear Irish music and relax with the locals. I really don't care a hoot about the food. That is not why I'm flying half way around the world.
