It's a snake fly. Nice shots. I don't see these very often.

My typing was faster than my brain. It's a snake fly. Closely related to mantisflies and used to be in the same order - the Neuroptera. But some specialists now put them in an order by themselves - the Raphidioptera.
Thanks. I went back and measured it and it was 3/4" from head to tip of wing. Do you have a good source for identifying these critters? I've tried BugGuide-- but haven't had much success.
wow! thats a really good find, and shots!!!!!

If you want to see other snakeflies, just type it into google and hit images. You'll find tons. As for a species id, bugguide might be able to handle it. Certainly it's the easiest choice.

Thanks. Once he climbed on the rim and started walking along the edge, keeping the correct angle became a lot easier.

Great shots, you have a great collection of weird and wonderful that side of the water.

Ah. I guess I dodged a bullet <pun>.... He initially landed close to my neck and I shook him off at which time he landed on my cactus (no they don't grow here-- only inside!).
Good to know for the future. First one I've seen here.
