The honey bees are gathering pollen from an unidentified weed that stands over 10 feet tall, with long flower spikes. The black carpenter ant is interesting to me because it was photographed in the vertical position as seen in the photo. It was just before dark and it was rearing up on its back 4 legs, apparently preening. The red carpenter ant was caught in the early morning in one of those rarer moments when it wasn’t moving around.

The black Carpenter Art is a stellar shot. Very well done. What is the approximate size?

The adult Carpenter ants here in Oregon are about 1/4" in size. The only ants I've seen lately are what we call "sugar ants" or "pantry ants". They are about 1-2mm in size.

I saw an ant in Costa Rica that was about 3/4" long. The field guide got it to grab a stick 18" long in it's pincers-- and then held the ant by the back end. The ant could hold the stick as it dangled. According to the guide, the natives used these ants as sutures to close a cut. They would get the ant to bite across the cut and then they would pinch off the body leaving the pincers closing the wound. Apparently they secreted an anesthetic as well.

The black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus, has workers of several sizes, varying from about 6 to 13mm. This one was on the lowest end of that scale.
