Hey all was wondering about this battery grip for my D7100 mixed reviews on it..does anyone else use this one and what do you think of it..one reviewer said you have to remove it every time you want to recharge the batteries..is this true..want to know before I purchase it and if there is any other comparable grips out there.. thanks..

There are a lot of Nikon grips at different prices. I have one for my D3200, I like them because I can hold my camera a lot more steady with the grip on. Your D7100 is bigger and heavier than a D3200, I would hate to tell you to buy one not like it, like I said...my camera is smaller than yours.

I have one similar on my d 7000 , I didn't pay any where that much, mines a cheap,hong kong copy , had it 18 months now and not an issue.
the door at the side opens to fit your battery. it does add weight but great for those sideways shots and has its own shooting button

The design of any of the grips is such that it must be removed in order to gain access to the camera battery.

I bought a "cheapy" ebay model for 50 and have had absolutely NO issues with it. It does everything the Nikon model does for about 1/4 the price. - now if you were talking about glass it would be a different story

I bought a knock off grip from Amazon and it works fine. Use it all the time on my D7000.

There is no need to put a battery in the camera body with the grip you just put one in the grip itself. If you want to put one in the body and one in the grip, that is your decision, but it is not necessary. With one battery I get roughly 5 hours of shooting time (varies under shooting conditions).

You do have to remove the grip to change the battery in the camera but not for the grip itself. In the menu you can choose to use the battery in the grip first and the battery in the camera second for reserve. This is what I do which means I usually only have to charge the grip battery. Every so often I will remove the grip and rotate the battery's so I am using both more or less equally. I like the grip knowing I have the extra power if needed and for the added hand hold when using the camera hand held. I also like the added heft and feel of the camera with the grip. ;)
Additionally, I agree with Pepper and would spend the difference and buy the Nikon grip- I did for my D600. But some of the third party grips will work the same. Your choice for sure.

Firstly and on a personal issue, I would always have a grip - so much more shooting time, better ergonomics and flexibility when shooting portraits. Apart from lenses, easily the best accessory I have purchased. It becomes a part of the camera body instead of an add-on. The D90 Nikon grip I have does however need the batteries to be removed to facilitate charging. Not an issue in my mind though.

All my cameras are gripped, even the film cameas (except the Medium Format). It is just as being said, the camera is just so much nicer to hold onto, and not only vertical, but I also prefer it in the "normal" horizontal positioning (there is still some real estate under your pinky, you actually have something to hold on to). That and the additional battery capacity make it really worth while. I've never heard of a battery grip, that needs to be removed to change the batteries, they all should have doors for it.

I think what they are saying is they leave one battery in the camera then attach the vertical grip and add batteries to the vertical grip. Not all cameras work like this (I have Nikon and Sony cameras and grips), my Sony cameras only allow batteries in the grips as the grip extends into the camera battery compartment, however in my Nikon cameras I can put a battery in the camera body and also in the grip offering two batteries, and the only problem is when needing to recharge the battery in the camera you need to remove the grip to get at that battery. My Nikon batteries last twice as long as my Sony batteries so I only put batteries in the vertical grip.

yeah that is all I really wanted to know..seemed strange that they would put one battery in the actual camera and one in the grip when it is so much easier just to keep both in the grip for easy access and charging..I have a grip on my Canon and it also extends into the battery cavity of the camera..making it easy to remove for charging....anyway..I feel so naked without it on my new Nikon so will be purchasing as soon as possible..lol..and for the extra battery life or couse.. :)...thanks everyone for responding!...cheers!.. :-)

One more point on the grip, you get an increase of FPS with the vertical grip.
