Can't Open D800 raw files in Photoshop CS6

While seeking out and confirming that I have all the Adobe updates(including Raw 7.1) I am still unable to open the larger D800 files in CS6. I used Capture NX2 as a trial in the past, but am reluctant to pay >$100 for this product.
I want to take a file from View NX2 directly into CS6.
Any help/info will be appreciated. Thanks

This may be a longshot, but did you upgrade ACR by going through the Updates menu item in the Help Menu as opposed to just downloading the file? Using the Updates link assures ACR gets installed properly.

This probably your solution. Adobe almost requires that you use the update mechanism within PhotoShop CS6.

From Adobe's website:
"Camera Raw 7.1 is now available on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Adobe Photoshop CS6. Camera Raw 7.1 adds new Defringe controls to help address chromatic aberration. Defringe is available as part of the Lens Correction panel. Camera Raw can also now read 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit HDR files. Supported HDR formats are TIFF and DNG. Photoshop CS6 customers can upgrade to Camera Raw 7.1. Customers of previous versions of Photoshop can utilize DNG Converter 7.1 for raw file support for newly added cameras."

Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) version 7.1 will NOT open D800 RAW files, you need at least version 7.3 to open those files. The current version is 7.4 and its a free download from the Adobe upgrade website.

So the Adobe web page is in error concerning ACR v.7.1? I could believe that.

Just curious why you'd go to the trouble to download 7.1 if 7.4 is free and has all the latest enhancements?

The D800 is listed in 7.1. It is NOT listed in 7.3 or 7.4 so I would have to figure 7.1 would do it. Of course if you update to the current 7.4 you would be fine.

To install 7.1, you can download an installer to update the ACR plugin for CS6, to update the plugin for 7.4- you have to use the Adobe Update route. When updating software on my netbook, I update only as far as I need to.

You must still need to upgrade. It should happen automatically by opening CS6 and going to the help menu. Then click on "updates" and you should get the latest everything. I know that CS6 works on your camera files. I've got a friend that has the same setup. Keep in mind that you should open CS6, open Bridge, then find the thumbnail of the raw image you would like to open in ACR and double click. This will open the image in ACR first then you can choose to adjust the image, and then open in CS6' editor or open as a smart object in CS6' editor. You can also click "done" and it will close the ACR plugin and go back to Bridge.

Question. Is the NEF from the D800 direct from the storage card (SD) or (CF) or was these files opened and/or modified by View NX2 or Capture NX2. Try to open a file directly from he card or just transfer the file to your hard drive without using any photo software.

I don't believe Photoshop will recognize any PP that you did in NX2. That may be a contributing factor to your problem.

I have read reports that Nikon transfer software (NX2) may write incorrect header data thus making the file unrecognizable in ACR.

When going the CS6>Help>update route, the Adobe site indicates that everything is "up-to-date".
Anyway, I downloaded the ACR converter 7.4, and there is
no improvement. When I click on a stored D800 file in NX2 and I right click on it, I choose to open it with CS6.
CS6 comes up briefly, then includes the small box telling me that I need to have the latest version of camera raw.
I have a circular problem with which I have wrestled for about 1-1/2 weeks. Any further ideas or suggestions ?

I'm not sure about the header data, but it was pointed out in a recent Nikon Seminar that I attended that Photoshop would not recognized NX2 p/p. As much as they tried to sell NX2 in these seminars, this made it a non-starter for me.
