A door collector?
A door collector?...

The doors are all handcarved from a single piece of wood. They are magnificent up close and personal. They lead to a lodge in the Smoky Mountains. If you notice the leaves from the trees behind me were captured in the reflection of the windows giving the illusion of the tree in the actual picture.

An interview with pledwith

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started about aged 10, and managed to cut feet and heads off as you do. I bought my first decent camera when i started working, a cosina which i still have.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Yes I studied for a series of City & Guilds qualifications at evening classes for 3 - 4 years before moving on to study for a degree in commercial photography, again in the evenings over 4 years. Joining the RPS along the way and now ARPS.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Sorry but don't know which shot we're talking about .. oops

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I work with a Sony Alpha 900 with a three lens setup in the bag, Sigma 17-35mm, Minolta 28-75mm, and Sigma 70-200mm. Much more and it's tooo heavy to drag around.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
If I could do it again I suppose it would depend on whether I new I'd done it before. There's almost always a little something you'd like to change with any shot.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
That's a good one, after spending 20+ years in IT I wouldn't want to go back to that. Maybe air traffic controller at some remote location.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
My web site have a fair range of images on it including several galleries of related works - paledwith.co.uk - and the books on Dorset Churches (some 400+) can also be found on Blurb.com.

Thanks
Phil.

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
A number a years and it was my older brother who got me interested. He's still as obsessed with photography as I am

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?

No formal training, but read lots of "how to" photography books
I enjoy landscape and macro photography.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I appreciated that someone had gone to a lot of trouble to brighten up a dull wall.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
A Fujifilm XS-1 and no special setup.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I don't think so.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I know what I wouldn't do and that's draw or paint as I'm useless at both.

No blog or web site.

An interview with John Howard

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started? I took a lot of photos in Rome in college decades ago, and started again when I retired a few years ago.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most? Schooled as an architect but no art or photography. Naturally like urban landscapes and old town scenes.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot? The night before we witnessed the cremation ceremony in Varanasi, and that morning the ritual washing in the Ganges. We had discussed that the ceremonies all involved old people unlike in say, Italy, where it is always about the children. When I saw the small girl, who seemed to have responsibility for opening or closing the doors, framed in the dark shadow, I immediately wondered if she was typical in this old city neighborhood.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Nikon D3X with 17-35 mm 1:2.8 D lens. No special setup. It was spontaneous, hand held. I tried the shot again from my knees at the girl's eye level and it was not as good because she had more light behind her and I preferred to show her diminutive size.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again? Had the girl not run away, I guess I would have shot it with different bracketing to try and bring more detail in the shadow(while keeping it dark) and not burning out the plaster door frame on the lower left. Might have been good to see different facial expressions too. But I only had time for two quick clicks.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do? I'm retired. I play golf. But cannot see myself not traveling to take photos. There are so very many types of photography and I am just getting started.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work? I have a flicker account that is new and there is not much there so don't waste your time. When I retired I started a private charitable foundation and I give my I images to that and post them. I also sell photo books to benefit the foundation. This site is not fully up to date as the images go hack to when I was using only a pocket digital camera. You can log on to CloseFriendFoundation.com and send me an email from there and I will let you know when my Bhutan, India and Myanmar photos are available.

Thanks for the interest,
John Howard

An interview with Vicki57

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started taking pictures years ago. I was always the one with the camera at parties or family gatherings. I got serious about about 3 years ago. I make greeting cards out of my prints and sell them at Art and Craft fairs.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I am self taught. I have read books on photography and learned by watching others and alot of trial and error. I mostly do landscapes, flowers, animals and muscial instruments. I have recently branched out into portraits, family photos and weddings (which can be quite intimidating - LOL)

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
When I saw these doors I was immediately intrigued by them. As I got closer and realized the time and patience it took to hand carve these doors it made me appreciate them so much more.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I have a Nikon D40 and a Nikon D3200, which I love. This shot was taken while exploring the lodge, hand held. No special set up.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I don't think so I was really pleased with this shot.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I don't know. I love photography. Maybe try to paint. I am a very crafty person and love all types of art.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have a Facebook page under my business Photo Expressions by Victoria and I am working on a website. I also have a photo called Sunrise Over Crab Orchard Lake hanging at the new Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon Illinois. It was quite an honor to have one of my photos selected to grace the walls of this new hospital.
