I am a 77 year old grandma, doing my best to keep up with the kids.
I have had an iPhone 5 for about a year and I occasionally need a little assistance and encouragement in using it as my main camera.
I would love to hear about others and their successes in using the various camera apps.

If I might offer an easier alternative for you, rather than waiting for others to post, if you will notice at the top of the page is the word SEARCH. Click on that and enter such as ""I phone Photography" it has been discussed very heavily in the past and am sure you will find a lot of good information.

Well, yes, the Search function is there. I have found the iPhone5 to be a convenient camera "as is." It was named Camera of the Year for 2013 for having color capabilities better than high-end camera models.
For shear fun and amusment you might enjoy "Cycloramic."
Download and start the program, place the iPhone on its end (connector side down), on a perfectly flat surface (glass or granite top) and watch it turn around in place taking photos in 360 degrees. It's a show stopper, something the grandkids will find mighty cool!
The two apps I use on my iphone are Camera plus and instagram. I usually shoot using camera plus it allows you to zoom. I use instagram to adjust and post to the various site I use.
Thanks for your suggestion. I found a lot of interesting information.
Thanks for your suggestions. I will check those apps out.
Thanks for your suggestions. I have Camera+ on my phone and I will have to use it more.

From Wikipedia:
Apple held an event to formally introduce the phone on September 12, 2012. Apple began taking pre-orders on September 14, 2012, and over two million were received within 24 hours. Initial demand for the iPhone 5 exceeded the supply available at launch on September 21, 2012 If you've had it for a year, it's more likely an iPhone 4. The 5 has only been out for 7 1/2 months total and you didn't likely get one of the first batches that filled back pre-orders throughout October and November 2012.
Welcome, by the way. You won't likely get a lot of help here because from what I can tell not many of the regulars use iPhones for photography because of it's limited megapixel resolution and no optical zoom to compose with. But I might be surprised at how many iPhoners come out of the woodwork to fulfill your request.
It's definately a 5. I actually got it towards the end of last summer. I got an iPhone so that I could always have a camera with me, where ever I go. But I also have a couple of cameras, which I seldom use.
I could post a handful of iPhone shots but no need to as we know they make acceptable pictures tho some are prone to deny that fact. Guess pride does work in strange ways with some folks.
