Raymond, that's really good. I'll try again tonight shooting RAW and see what I can come up with. I've tried shooting the moon before and have never had much luck.

Randy: Here are some other pictures of the moon with different settings. these were not done in RAW mode and using Photoshop Elemnts #6. Photo: Jan 17, 2011.JPG settings: 1/400 F/11 ISO 400.
DSC8456.JPG 1/6 F/8 ISO 800.

I live in SoCal, just South of Riverside, and as you probably know, our air quality down here is not the best.

Yosemite is my favorite National Park! You will love it. There are no bad views in Yosemite. Climb Sentinel dome and hike out to Taft point also. I liked them better than Glacier point. And the view from the top of Upper Yosemite falls and along the trail is worth the hike.

I shot this in July 2010 with a Canon SX 1 IS with ISO 250, shutter speed 1/60, F 5.7, 100mm focal length (and 3.2 digital zoom) using a tripod and remote. I have taken many good photos of the moon using this technique but the rest are on my other computer (in the bedroom where kids are asleep). Good luck!

It's been so long since the last time I went. It's kinda sad actually. I live 2hrs away from this beautiful place and I haven't been since shortly after high school (that was a loooong time ago).

Those are great and yeah, LA county used to be the worst for air quality. Still up there on the list. I thought about waiting until after a rain, but it's unlikely the weather would be so accommodating as to rain a few hours before a full moon and then stop so I can take a picture.

I really don't know. There seem to be many possible culprits, not the least of which could be that I'm just not getting the focus 100%.

I always remove the UV filter and make sure that I have a clean lens, I don't shoot with the filter mounted. I do an auto focus and then turn it off (switch on side of lens) I manual focus and take pictures while advancing the manual focus at very, very small increments, taking a picture after each adjustment, take about 3 or 4 , then, do the same thing but in the opposite direction while shooting after each adjustment. You're bound to hit the sharpest focus somewhere in this process. I wait til the moon is pretty high in the sky, almost overhead, this reduces the amount of atmosphere that the light has to go through to get to the camera. You got a full Moon coming up...
Good luck.

Focus Bracketing, I like it!
