I agree that having knowledge and skill, in terms of image composition related to photography is crucial. I also agree that that knowledge and skill transcends equipment - here is an image I captured with an iPhone 4 camera:

However, in my experience, photographic knowledge and skill is enhanced with an increased capability of equipment used - here is an image I captured with a Nikon D5000:

I did not recently add a D700 FX to my camera bag with the expectation that it would somehow provide me more knowledge and skill as a photographer. Rather - just thought it was time to add a new flavor to my imaging capability.

Cheers!
Greg

Great composition and details !

Keep up the good work.

As far as your equipment, the full frame camera is a jewel, obviously.

However, that camera did NOT take the pics ! the operator did.

We all have heard comments from friends or family who like our photos, such as " what camera did you use ?? "

I invariably respond: " When you see a Monet or a Van Gogh, do you wonder what brand of brush he used ? "

Years ago, one of the renowned photographers of the day was asked how he was able to capture such evocative images. His standard reply was "F8 and be there." Fantastic images can be captured with a pinhole camera. I'll step up to full-frame when the limit is my gear--not my lack of knowledge and skill.

Rats - I despise thieves! I was exposed to (exuse the pun) 35mm film photography at 10 years of age, and was loaned a Nikon F, which provided me the opportunity to shoot and get an hands on understanding of image composition (those were the days - I learned to zoom with my feet using that Nikon F and a 50mm prime).

Four years later my Dad bought bought me a Nikon F2 - that camera follwed me through college and my military career. I still have that F2 in storage, have not captured an image with it in over16 years.

Hi dhelix33
I'm an fan of the NiKon F2. But unfortuanately mine was stolen about a year ago. Now I'm using the Nikon D3000 which I'm slowly learning how to use. I really like you black and whites. They seem to set a mood of days gone by. Excellent pictures..

I changed over to digital imaging cameras from my old (but well used and trusty) Nikon F2 35mm film SLR camera years ago. Have been using Nikon DX format cameras since moving into DSLR imaging (currently shoot with a Nikon D5100 and D3100 DX format bodies).

However, I made the move into full frame digital imaging with the purchase of a Nikon D700 FX a couple months ago – and have found the FX has taken me yet to another level of digital imaging.

Cheers!
