I am taking a trip to Machias Seal Island off the coast of Maine specifically to take photos of puffins. It will be in early morning and may be foggy. Any hints for photographing in the fog would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, Pray.

Not meaning to be flip but I don't know of any technique to photographically make fog go away. The only think you can hope to do is to use it "Artistically" in your picture.

I love Puffins, my favorite bird and I love Maine, my favorite state. You are going to have a GREAT time! Looking forward to viewing some of your pics when you get back.

Actually, Donna, get as close as you can physically to minimize the affect of the fog. Be careful of the lens fogging and minimize changing lenses. If it is really soupy an Optek rainsleeve would be good protection for the gear. That's not a bad idea anytime you are on a small boat in salt water.

I wasn't being silly. My wife forgot hers when we were on a whale photo op. I've never seen anyone so miserable. It ruined her whole trip.

Absolutely you can take photos in the fog! Try different methods with aperture, timing, distance, etc. I got some incredible shots when heavy fog rolled in over our harbor. In fact, I put a slide show together with music and posted it to YouTube "Fog over Northport". Take a look. The ethereal quality lends itself to some really interesting photos. Fog lifts as the morning sun burns it off. If you can possibly stay there until after 10am, you can then take clearer shots. Have a great time! I'm jealous .... But .... I see a road trip in my future! I'm on Long Island. Great info on a destination.

I once took a workshop with Freeman Patterson in Rockport Maine where we hoped for fog, but it seldom came. Made do with rain and my mister. :)

My husband and I made that trip three years ago in July and we got a sunny day. We took a boat out of Grand Manan, New Brunswick and got lucky to get our reservation to get on the island and into a photo blind. It was beyond beautiful. The birds were so close it was impossible not to take beautiful pictures. If it's foggy, you may still be able to get some great shots, just because the birds come in so close to the blind. Good luck!

Here are some puffin pics posted today from the very same place. May be crowded out there.
