I recently updated my DSLR to a Sony Alpha 350. My previous flash was Minolta 3600HS. My upgrade came with a Promaster 7500 EDF. Any thoughts as to which one I should keep and which one I should sell?

I'm new to digital stuff, but I think there can be a problem with some older flashes on the newer digital cameras. I would research it well for compatibility issues ( amt of elec discharge differences?) Maybe someone who knows more about this could advise you?

I would keep them both for the simple reason that if you ever decide to use remote triggers, then you are set. Even though neither one of them is high end as far as spending money is concerned, they are both pretty powerful. If they both work with TTL on your camera, then you have it made in the shade! If you need to get rid of one or the other, keep the one that has the most features. Hotshoe compatibility is not an issue with either one of these.

I have an old Vivitar 7500 flash that I keep on my Sony a580. It does not work with TTL but that does not bother me since all of the manual controls on the flash unit work just fine. I do have to use a hotshoe adapter though. No biggie.

I don't use flash very often so I am not sure I will ever use both. The promaster has a rotating flash head. Is this important?

It comes in handy.

It seems to me you could use a non-rotating flash as a remote flash, but would be restricting to use on camera ...as you couldn't swivel for more control on bouncing flash from a wall or reflectors off to the side.

Was wondering what the need to rotate the flash was. Thanks for the info.

It is very useful for bounce flash.

Thanks but they both rotate up and down but the promaster rotates side to side. I guess you would use it to bounce from corners?

Well from the wall, or a reflector. But that is the general idea.

Just curious why you picked the A-350 instead of the A-37?

I had looked at the A-350 but chose the A-37 based on reviews like this:

http://snapsort.com/compare/Sony-SLT-A37-vs-Sony_Alpha_DSLR-A350

I realize the 350 is a "real" DSLR and the 37 is an SLT, but the capabilities for the price swayed me.

Just asking...

Phil

Just a case of a deal coming along that I could not refuse.
The A37 is no doubt a better camera but this was way cheaper.

I have the 3600hs and the Sony A300 and A77 the 3600 HS appears to work well with both bodies whereas the 5600 and 5800 HS I have don't seem to work anywhere near as consistently

I would keep both and learn to use them on camera and off camera. I shoot Sony and I have 7 flashes and use them a good deal in full sun to fill shadows, both on camera and off camera. Your 3600HS will do high speed sync I believe and you can get some fantastic results using HSS. Below is a pic I did recently using HSS in full sun at noon.

For an explanation of HSS, see this thread. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-123170-1.html
