first try at portraits.
Well..being a noob, I decided to branch out and instead of just shooting snap shots of my dog...I thought I'd try and take a serious portrait of my wife.
Constructive criticism welcome.
I have no expertise to offer, but I like them.
I like your pictures. I like the depth of field you used and the lighting. I'm told on women the lighting is most flattering if it is flat lighting--coming from both sides (frontal, not by the ears) to minimize wrinkles and other skin imperfections. Depends on what you are trying to show in your photos. I also like that you focused on the closest eye. The second one is almost too much of a side-glance. You need some white showing on both sides in a portrait. Great pictures.
really great shots.. nice work..
BTW, the lighting technique you used is called "loop". See the shadows by her nose in the shape of a loop?
Thanks for the comments everyone...
Mary..thanks for the tips..I'll look for that next time and no...I had no idea that what I did had a name...lol..
I was in a daze....just trying to remember everything!

These are really good for your first try at portraits (much, much better at my first 12 goes at it).
I'm not a huge fan of #2, mostly because it's giving the illusion of a double chin. Have her look more at the camera next time and it will force her chin up a little and take away the folds in the neck (which is giving the illusion of the double chin).
Good job!
MWAC,
ahh...yes.
Those are the things I was blind to...
It's hard to see all of this in the heat of the moment.
Next time, I'm going to review the pics in real time on my laptop in Lightroom...trying to evaluate on a little LCD doesn't work... :(
Its out of my league to critique studio work, so i will leave it to this. I like the way #1 and #3 are framed. I get a great sense of your wife's personality when looking at these which is very important. #3 frame is especially good to me mostly because the way you clipped the top of her head, and the softness you included. They scream
Pro studio and not snap shot, and for a first attempt, very good.
I think you have done a great job here. The only thing I see that no one has noticed is that the eyes are soft behind her glasses. I would like to see them a bit sharper. Nice job. Now the big question. Did she like them?
Country's Mama..
Good point..I'm going to see what I can do to help that in Lightroom...
Yes...she did like them! That was the important part :)
Rhino.
thanks..I think that's why i like 3 also...it's different than the rest.
Since I have been here reading almost everything that is posted, and the one thing that has been pointed out over and over is pay attention to the details in portraits, and the one thing that I see which I dont like, is her bra strap is showing, but then again that is just a big pet peeve of mine to start with and with that being said, if I were getting a portrait done of myself and I saw my bra strap the photographer would have to do over, I would not pay for it, again detail
Nice first attempt especially considering she has glasses which poses a challenge. I most fond of the black and whites. Last pictures main problem is her right lens is blurred. You lit them well.
Again very good first attempt. Keep at it!!
btrflyangel357...
I realized that right AFTER we got done shooting, I should have mentioned that; that I already saw it..
You are right....the details...that's what's so hard to pay attention to in the "heat of the moment" as it were.
I also just tried tethered shooting using my laptop as the monitor and I have to say that that will help a lot...being able to see things very large.
