what size lens was he useing?
That picture was taken using a GigaPan robotic device (this is the EPIC Pro). The camera sets in the center cradle. The lens was probably at least to some degree telephoto. The GigaPan lets you set the boundaries of the area you want then just moves about that area tripping the shutter on your camera based on the lens focal length and amount of overlap you want. I have seen one used but I do not own one. The EPIC Pro lists for about $900 US dollars. It's not especially fast but it seems pretty easy to use. Personally I tend to freehand or tripod base most of my panoramas, but I'm a bit of a cheapskate. ;)

P.S. It must be used on a tripod or somehow mounted. You can't hand hold it.
