I am interested in buying a 300 mm/2.8 lens for my Nikon. I'd like a Nikon but is the new Sigma 300 mm/2.8 or 100-300/2.8 comparable?

What sort of photography are you interested in (sport, wildlife) and what will you be using the lens for?

There is some difference between the telephoto 300 and the zoom 300 that you refer to in your post; if a zoom will meet your needs you may want to consider the Nikon 70 - 300 as well.

I have been shooting for several years with a Nikon 70-300 AV on my Nikon D80. The AV feature is fantastic. priced at $500 , its worth every dime !

Don't pass up looking at the Nikon 300 f/4 - A great lens and less $$$$ - Good Shopping

If you are on full frame, the corners of the zoom will be a little soft. If you are on crop frame, this difference is no so much. In my opinion, both primes will take a 2X better than the zoom. The Sigma prime is a very good lens - not sure if you could see any difference with the Nikon ... The main attraction of the 2.8 is putting a 2X behind it, otherwise the F4 version is really good with a 1.4X behind it.

I have the 300 f2.8 and it's the sharpest lens I own. Fast AF, great contrast and works beautifully with the nikon 2X converter. 600mm 5.6 isn't bad for wildlife shooting.

I am currently using a D 300. My wife has a Nikon 500 mm/4 for her D300 and we are both taking a class in February with birds being the main interest. I cannot afford another 400 or 500 mm from Nikon but I felt a 300 would be handy to have for birds and other shots too.

Thanks for all your comments.

300mm may be a bit short for birds.

The 300mm F2.8 coupled with the new 2.0 111 teleconverter gives you an option of a 600mm at F5.6 which is very, very good. AF works very well and image quality is very good. The 300mm itself is a very good lens.

The current generation 300mm F2.8 VR2 is a very expensive lens. There are earlier versions available that are cheaper and work as well.

The nice thing about this rig is it is very easily hand held and therefore good for panning and the like.

Another option would be the 200/400 F4 Nikon; again this works really well with the teleconverter but is out to F8 so light is a real issue at times.

Good luck.
