Instead of backing up files right away (I'll learn someday) I tried to rotate a few upon opening (did Start, Explore, Removable F drive)...and program froze...now saying when try to open images on CF Card , "card needs to be formatted". Any programs you've used and would recommend to recover them?

ANY help would sure be appreciated.

be aware that when you reformat a card, the card is wiped clean and all data is summarily erased and permanently deleted. You stated that you wanted to recover images from a CF card. Reformatting will destroy any and all photos on a memory card. I've heard of recovery programs and products but have never needed or used them...

I did not reformat the card. I was just dumb enough to try and rotate my images I'd just pulled up and for whatever reason the 'program', crashed while trying to rotate. So when I looked at the contents of said CF card, it said card needed to be reformatted...of course I didn't fall for that game. I did buy a program called Card Recovery & it found them!! Thanks!!

What do you mean by "rotate"?

Meaning they were shot in portrait mode and I was rotating them I assume in Windows Microsoft Picture Manager--i need to start using a diff program to load & organize

Now I understand, but don't see why that would have the effect of you're losing the image. Question: have you ever formatted that particular card in both the camera and then later in the computer? If yes, this could be the problem.

I've only formatted in camera. Should I actually format in camera and then on my computer as well? This is the second card in the past 2 months this has happened. I am totally guessing here but I'm thinking by it not finishing what it was attempting to do it somehow creates a new 'path' and appears to be empty. Strange--appreciate your thoughts. Jeff

No, and again, no! Format in the camera only, every time, all the time. Aside from the problem being in the camera (which is unlikely because if it were I would expect the problem to show up pretty much all the time), I can only think that maybe you're using an off-brand memory card. Stick with Sandisk or one of the other major brand cards and see if this makes a difference.

I don't want to waste your time on this subject all night but I've only ever formatted in the camera...and all I shoot with is Sandisc and I do have one Transcend...ironically I've had issues with both so I am leaning toward the fact it MAY be my camera. The exact warning I got with the Transcend card last month was, "No Images on Card"...this time was a brand new 16GB Sandisc and it said, "Card needs to be formatted". Hopefully one day the mystery will be solved-- thanks again Chuck.

If you use Recuva and you are trying to recover camera RAW files you need to check "Other" the All files option instead of "Pictures". For an explaination go to my last post in this thread: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-12163-1.html#141972

Good luck

One last possibility, and one about which I know very little; maybe someone else can amplify on my answer.

I know that there are two standards for CF cards, and they are not backwardly compatible. Kinda like the changing standards with USB ports; an older 1.2 version won't accept the current and soon to be outdated 2.0 standard, but most 2.0 ports will accept the older 1.2 version port.

Is there a significant difference in age between your camera and the cards that you have had trouble with? If yes, then this might well be your problem.

You can use Remo Recover (Windows) - Media Edition software to recover photos from compact flash card. It can recover photos or videos from formatted memory cards as well. The software can recover deleted or lost photos from almost all types of storage devices like SD card, XD card, CF card, MiniSD card, MicroSD card, etc. You can download and install demo version of the software in your system to evaluate chances of recovery.
