I photographed this at the Botanical Arboretum in Charlotte NC, but I don't know what type of plant this is, please help.

where in Charlotte is the Botanical Arboretum you speak of??

It's a common tropical plant. I googled "Ginger plants" and saw a photo of it but not the exact species. It wouldn't take long to track it down though.

It's a southeast Asian variant of a bird of paradise plant. This one is used in Thailand for herbal medicine. A similar variety grows in Hawaii.

Thank you, I went by the bird of paradise plant and since it didn't look the same I gave up on it, now I have an answer. Thanks again.

I have seen it in South East Asia and the warmer northern climes of Australia.

It is a 'Heliconia'. Info here:http://members.iinet.net.au/~meckms/Heliconia%20Information%20Page.html see about halfway down the page 'Heliconia bihai (lobster claws).

oh okay ,I had a feeling that was it was at UNCC ....

Yes, it is an heliconia. Some call it "liconia." It's a cousin of the bird of paradise.
