one handed, wrong hand, handicapped shooting, tips?

I just lost use of my right hand, hopefully temporarily, bad arthritis. Any tips and discussion on shooting DSLR left handed. I know to use tripod and remote release, but that surely limits spontaneous shooting.

My replies will be limited as typing one handed is also difficult and I do not want to aggravate my "good" hand!

Thanks!

If you could mount a pistol kinda grip under the camera, could you hold it up with your right hand?
The camera would be "centered" above your hand.
If that works, can you get a shutter release cable for your camera that you could hold/use in your left hand.
Just, thinking......

That's a damn good question, and one that bothers me a bit - virtually every DSLR I've ever seen is set up for the shutter press by a right hand. As a LEFTY, I find that alarming, to say the least. They're also really set up for the viewfinder to be used by the RIGHT eye, and if that's not your best eye, that's also a slap in the face (so to speak).

I can only suggest a very light tripod and a remote release for the moment, and a strong dose of aspirin to alleviate the pain. I sincerely hope you feel better soon.

[Rant on]We left-handed people are one of the last 'special-interest' groups to not have any government legislation aimed at bringing our rights (ugh! See!) to the same level as every one else's. If I was only a fat Negro lesbian in a wheelchair, I'd be set for life.[Rant off]

You know the reason they shook with the right hand was to show fellow travellers and people met on the road that your hand was empty and held no weapons. We would have cleaned up as highwaymen.....he he he.

Yes - it showed the sword hand was empty. Which is another reason leftys are discriminated against..We could shake hands with our rights, and then pop the guy upside the head with the blackjack in our left hand, so left-handed people were looked on as sneaky sunsabitches.. SINISTER comes from the Latin for "LEFT".

I cleaned up the competition in my college fencing matches as a lefty. Until I met another lefty..lol

And sorry Randymoe, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I wish I had a better answer for how to use the camera left-handed. But now maybe you'll have a better appreciation for us "Sinistres"....

I am left handed and left eyed. In 1972 or so, I "reversed" the grip on a camera "L" bracket, so I can hold my camera & lens with left hand, leaving right hand open for focusing, aperture ring, and shutter.

I am now on my sixth camera body with the same bracket, usually set-up for macro.

I like this idea, but it will have to be used lefty. Maybe I can make a pistol grip with a trigger.

Thanks!

Good idea, but looks kinda unbalanced with only one hand.

Thanks!

Horizontal & vertical: quite stable. Notice the strap that actually supports most of the weight.
