ok,, I bought a RAVELLI tripod,, very strong and stable,, but, the ballhead is not,, so i need to purchase a better ballhead without going overboard in price,, say under $100 any suggestions? I assume it doesnt have to be only Ravelli.

I use the Manfrotto 322RC2. It is the model with a hand release. I like it a lot on my 190PROB. Sorry, I don't recall what it cost-- but I do think it was more than $100

I use a Manfrotto 494RC2 and a 496RC2 each is under $100. One for a monopod and one for a tripod, like both very much.

Look at the Vanguard products. They make some nice stuff. If you have $100 to spend, I would suggest getting the biggest one they have for that price. You never know what your next camera/lens combination will be, but if you're like most of us, it will be bigger and heavier. B&H sells Vanguard.

I shopped Ebay for mine and got a really good deal. Just a thought to save money and get a better one for less.

Did you try to tighten the set screws on your Ravelli? You will need a small Allen wrench to do it. I bought one at a Salvation Army for $7. It was missing the camera base plate and one set screw. Both were easy fixes. I did not have a set screw so I used a 10-32 Phillips screw instead. The Ravelli is adequate for my D300 with the 70-200 VR telephoto.

I have the Vanguard GH-100 pistol grip ballhead. LOVE IT! Infinitely adjustable and solid as a rock.

Check it out!

Eric
