i have a canon 600d with kit lenses, they are ok, but the 55-250 is a little short of zoom for bird photos, i get around 400mm with the canon crop factor, and feel that i could with
say around 600mm or even more,
any suggestions please, without breaking the bank, oh i live in australia cheers

Don't know what you're looking to pay COLANN but the Sigma 150-500 is an excellent lens. Just type it in the search section at the top and read peoples' reviews.

Hi Colann, I have the T3i/600D , I shoot presently with the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, I think my next big lens is gonna be the Sigma 150-500mm, I would look at this lens.

Hi, I shoot birds with a Tamron 200-500mm zoom. It works for me, and it can be had used.

I use a 60D and I just bought the Tamron 200-500mm. I also have an 18-200mm canon that i really like but I just can reach out far enough with it.

Yes I paid full price at our local Camera Store( Idaho Camera). I find it difficult to utilize an employees time and then buy it cheaper on line. I compared the price every where on line but couldn't bring myself to go around the local dealer.

try the Sigma 150-500, I use one on a Canon 60D and a 500D So with a crop factor of 1.6 that equals 750mm. If necessary a multiplier can be used as well. Great lens for the money and you can find used ones.

I would also suggest you rent (if it's available) the Sigma 150-500mm and see what you think.

Colann, how much would it take to break the bank?
The Canon 100-400 comes to mind. And with a little tweaking(taping the pins), it will take the 1.4X nicely.
Good luck

thanks to you all for replying to my post, re what lens to get with a good zoom for my 600d, it looks like the sigma 150-500 wins out, and as the 500 x the crop factor would get me something like 750, that would be real good, just have to save my $$$$, and shop around, cheers colin

Just curious... is it possible the focal length of one lens (i.e. Sigma) can have the same or nearly the same "reach" as a different focal length of another lens (i.e. Canon). In other words, is it possible the Canon 100-400 has a similar "visual reach" as the Sigma 150-500 on the long end?

hi mdorn, as far as i know and from the info i have rec on the Hog, the sigma at 500 will give me around 750, and the canon 400 about 600, to be honest i would be happy with either, as they would give me much more reach, than my 250, thanks for replying colin

Hi COLANN,

I think you misunderstood my question. I wasn't talking about crop factor, I was talking about perceptible reach your eyes see/camera captures. I was told that the Canon @ 400mm made the object you are focusing on look as close to you as the Sigma @ 500mm. If you want to multiply the crop factor in there, that's fine, but my question won't change. Thanks.

focal length

Don't know who you have been talking to; but, I would quit listening to them. Do you really think that 1/400 will give you the same as 1/500? That is a 20% differental that you think the camera/lens is not going to see and capture? In what world might this happen? Are we playing too much Star Wars of late?
