Taking a crack at this....

OK, this is my first upload. My wife found this fellow hiding in our wood pile (much to her dismay). I know the background is a little busy but he was sitting among the wood chips and twigs and I wasn't about to move him (or her). Aside from some much welcome criticisms and advice on my photographic technique, perhaps someone might recognize this beast. I'd guess the body to be about 1.5" long with maybe a 3" leg spread. We live in Maryland, USA.

Shot with an Olympus E-3 with a 50mm 2.0 and the built-in flash. 1/200 at f/16, ISO 100. Thanks

From what I can see, I'd guess it's in the family Pisauridae (Nursury web spiders), VERY cloesly related to wolf spiders. The eye arrangement and relative size are a wee bit different in these two groups.

This one, as a larger guess, looks a lot like Dolomedes tenebrosis.

Wow. I'll look that one up. I thought it might be a Wolf Spider, too. Actually at first I thought it might be a Brown Recluse but didn't want to spook my wife. And I didn't see that "violin" mark. But the eyes do look different from what I found on WikiHow - four small, two big then two medium.

Just Googled it. And that's what it looks like. AND my wife was right. She said it might be a Fishing Spider. Thanks.

Your wife is a smart lady. These guys are often found near water, though not always. AND they do catch small fish.

Dark Fishing Spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomedes_tenebrosus

Not too shabby, especially considering that you used pop-up flash. Keep practicing.

I'd say you did rather well with a onboard flash, you might try a gary fong "puffer" on the popup, don't know if they make one for your camera

Thanks, gentlemen. I see that there is a Gary Fong Puffer that will fit my camera. Only $10?

Ordered.

Though I do have a couple of off camera flashes, one TTL and have a diffuser on it as well. Just had some problems getting the distance right at the time so I went with the onboard unit.
