Photoshop is great... but you might think about starting with Picasa... it's a good program, lots of features and its a free download. Then move to something better later.

Look into PhotoShop Elements 10. It should be way below $100 at you local Costco Warehouse. A great program.

Picasa is a great program...free and easy to use but has a lot of features. Enjoy!

If you are getting into photography for the long haul, I would recommend Photoshop Elements 10 as a baseline for your future growth. It can take years to use all it's capabilities, but will prepare you for any other steps you might take in the future (like Photoshop CS5).

PAINT.NET would be a next step free program after mastering Picassa 3. I just downloaded it the other day and will possibly learn how to use all its features by the time I pass on (I'm 62). For starters I would recommend Picassa 3, learn how to use that and then decide where you want to go from there. I picked PAINT.NET because it's free and one of the easier ones to use, ha ha!! Fortunately you can get a free tutorial on line on how to use it. Good luck and you can always come back here with questions---I know I'll be with you..........

I have quite successfully used Picasa 3 (with built-in Picnic) for tweaking all of my macro-photography. Now my interest is peaked by the mention of Paint.Net for more complicated manipulation. Will it photo stack for multiple exposure star trails? Does it layer if I want to add clouds & color to a bald sky?

It layers, but I don't know about the stacking. It is a huge jump from Picassa 3---I would compare Picassa 3 (which is about as far as I'm willing to manipulate a photo)to kindergarden and Paint.net as college. The thing is it's free and if you don't have the time to learn it or don't like it you can just kick it to the curb, no loss. I'm going to go look for the tutorial site---Oh by the way it's suppose to be one of the easier programs to learn, it blew me away..........

Start with a free program, like Picasa.Picnik is an online component that comes along with Picasa to give you a bit more. Add Elements if you want to do more, such as working with layers.

I can't get to move over here so you'll have to go to it. Go to past threads and I'll have one on there called "B&Ws Need Critiqueing and Help". Follow that to the end and the site for the tutorial will be there, just click on it and you'll be ready to go. Hope it works for you, I think you'll like it---let me know..........
