Another Indy 500 bites the dust.
I get irritated every time a great race like the Indy 500 ends under a yellow flag. I know it is the rules but, it is so anti-climactic. This years race was shaping up for a great finish, lead changes galore, close action, less than 10 laps to go, top 5-6 cars all freshly pitted and ready to duke it out for the checkered flag. Then, a minor crash, full track yellow, down to 4 or 5 laps to go, track cleared, pace car off the track, and they are off . . . . No, it wasnt to be, another crash. Its all over, time to go home. I have no problem with Tony Kanaan winning. I just would have liked to see him WIN it, not just be at the head of the pack with 4 laps to go when someone at the back of the pack lost control of their car. I know it will never happen but I would love to see a rule that no laps under yellow count in the last 5 laps of the race. Lets see another finish like Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear in 1992, half a car length at over 200 mph. Now, THAT is racing!
I went to an Indy car race at the Texas Motor Speedway a couple of years ago. The cars were so fast that I couldn't even read the numbers on them. They go around that 2 1/2 mile oval like it's a go-cart track. The only one I could keep up with was Danika Patrick's lime green car. It was my first car race, but it was almost hard to know who was in first, but there was a big difference between the faster cars and the slower cars.

Ya think? I'm willing to bet the faster cars were in front of the slower cars. That's probably your first clue. But I could be wrong. :D :D :D

In Indy Car racing? Not necessarily...since the fast cars can lap the slow cars and actually be right in the same pack with them.
Nascar has a green -white- checker provision. They do not end
under caution even it it means extending race past posted mileage.

It was a great race...ending it on a yellow flag sucked.
Indy Car Racing is for the birds. Going around in a circle at 220 mph is dangerous, sure, but it does little to prove the worth of either the (car) vehicle, or the driver. Formula One is a much better compromise, albeit not much passing or competition. The car is tested in all the applications a real car should be, accel, braking, turning etc. etc. I hope the Austin Grand Prix is successful. Maybe the stigma of Redneck Racing can be put where it belongs.

I was disappointed too.I have been a big fan of Formula one since 1986 and love the drama between the drivers. NBCSPORTS just had a movie on about my favorate driver" Senna" which I enjoyed a lot.
I watched the race in Monaco yesterday, was a much better race than watching them go in circles.
watched on NBC, no station out here covered Indy.
TchrBill, I couldn't agree with you more. When the yellow came out with only 3 or 4 laps to go, I was yelling at the TV because the race wasn't going to end with an exciting 200mph finish. Hate the rule.
At least NASCAR gives them, I believe, 2 chances to win the race under green before going to a yellow/checker finish.

To each their own I guess. I have watched the road course races and they do nothing for me. I am not fond of the small ovals because they are so dangerous but on a track the size of Indy, the road courses simply don't compare for excitement. Maybe watching cars make left turns all day doesn't appeal to some but, to say that it doesn't prove the worth of the car or driver is ludicrous.

That is what I would like to see at Indy as well. Another thing I like about NASCAR is brushing against another car or the wall doesn't disable the car. Too often in Indy Car, one driver does something stupid and ends the race for another driver because of minor contact.

I also love F1 but think the Monte Carlo race sucks, it's my least favorite race of the season. The cars outgrew this road course in the '70s and it's by far the most "follow the leader" course on the circuit. With it's rich history I can understand why others like it so much, but it's not for me.
