Hello alanenfl welcome to the group.
Thank you for putting your images in download which helps with CC.
I am impressed with your images we are all trying to improve and welcome advice from the many knowledgeable users of this group.
I believe a few small steps in your case will provide giant strides.
Your camera has done an excellent job of balancing the images by averaging everything out because you have used the auto mode.
But the result of this they look a little on the flat side.
My advice is to switch to AV (Aperture Priority) which allows you to select the aperture size, dependent on the depth of field you are looking for; the mode then selects the correct speed for the aperture. You only have to select the correct ISO for the spot on exposure. Then use your +/- EV button to lighten or darken the image. This usually makes the image look more lifelike.
Your composition for #2,3 is very good, although your focus is slightly off.
With still-life type images I would suggest using manual focus if your camera has live view zoom in so you can critically focus with the focus ring, then take the image.

Hi alan :) I have seen some of Macro2009s flower shots and they are much better than mine..lol..I find getting detail in petals especially white and yellow really hard. As a short cut to learning, why dont you look through the close up gallery and find the photos you really admire and either PM the taker or study the exif used in download if stored.

One of the things I would say is, avoid the dead centre approach as your #1 instead look for fresh and new perspectives, off centre with attractive foliage or surrounding buds,is a starting point..keep posting and asking for cc, you will be suprised how quickly you will progress..
