Spring Football - High Pass

Another attempt to Photograph Grandson Zach's Spring Football Game.

Zach is number 99, at 6'-5" this pass was a bit over thrown.

Zach did catch a 22 yard touchdown pass last evening Thursday May 23, 2013.

As you can see, I was pushing the lens I was using a 17-50mm f2.8 under the field lights and the distance from me.

Using Nikon D-600.

Tom, I think this is a good image especially fo a 50 mm that must have been cropped a lot. Were you shooting from the sideline?

Evening,

Yes, I was shooting from the side line, the Sun had just set and Field Lights were on, I had the lens wide open at f2.8 and around 1/125 trying to hold as steady as possible.

Action as you know so fast...the Lens is a DX lens for my Nikon D-5000, but as Shot mounted on my Nikon D-600 Full Frame which I have had about six weeks.

I did crop a bit to eliminate some of the open field grass area, plus post processed with Photoshop Elements 10, to add a small amount of light and contrast.

Original was shot in Raw Format. (Hope that's not cheating, I prefer and try my best to post only those right out of the Camera)

There were a couple of Professional Photographer's on the Field, one from our Newspaper. We chatted a moment, he was very nice, and was using a Cannon and a huge 400mm or so Lens..very nice guy and encouraging to an old man trying to capture memories for a Grandson.

Thank You for looking and the comments.

Tom, how long have you had the D600? Wonderful camera! Did you get a lens with the body or body only? Were you using the 50 since it is a 2.8? Guessing you know you can crank up the ISO much higher on your 600 than you could on the 5000. ;)

Hi,

I have had the D-600 about six weeks, have shot about 2,500 shots..

I bought it with the 24-70mm & 70-300mm FX Lens.

I have used the 17-50mm f2.8 DX as I did in this shot and the 50mm f1.8.

Yes, I had the iso up around 800, I did not go higher last night, thus think that is why I had to brush up lighting in Photoshop.

I have checked the D-600 a couple of times for the reported Dust/Oil spots...around 1000 shots could see a small spot in mid lower left, used a Grotto Blower and then checked again and could not see anything...

I have been using 'Back Button Focus" with AF-C with D21 Active when shooting Sports. I have been shooting Sports in Aperture Mode, You can see a couple of Spring Basketball I previously posted. I still have tons to learn.

Erv here on the Hog has been a "Fantastic Mentor" and emailed me lots of tips, patiently Critiqued all my mess ups, I am very grateful to him.

I think this Forum is the best on the Internet Sources..

Hope I answered your questions, Thanks for your interest.

Tom, I push ISO up to 2500 with little problems. Wondering why you aren't using the 24-70?

Good Morning,

Hope you rested well.

I used the 70-300 until the Sun went down, then due to loss of light and the f4.5 min on that lens even with higher iso my shutter speed was not fast enough for the action.

I then changed to the 17-50mmm f2.8 Dx Lens and with iso at 800 better.

Thanks for the input on iso, next opportunity, I will crank it up to obtain faster shutter speed and light exposure.

I have moved the iso up to 1600 in the Basketball Gyms in order to obtain some of those fast action shots.

I really like the D-600, I bought the Darrel Young Book and that has helped some in my learning curve. A few small things I don't like on the button positions, etc. Also, a couple of times, I must have pushed the wrong button on the SD slots, I was shooting one with Raw format the other JPG and for soem reason due to hitting wrong button or a mistake all photos were taken in RAW, .NEF Format...Well Photoshop Elements 10 in their wisdom does not support D-600 .NEF...So I had to download the Adobe converter to .DNG and go thru that hassle to process photos...time consuming...

Sorry for the ramble.

A very Happy Memorial Day Weekend< Please Remember all of those whom have served our Nation and especially the Families of those Brave Souls who gave their lives for our FREEDOMS.. I do not take that lightly, I love America.

May God Bless and Protect our Nation and all of its Citizens.
