Hats off to UHG. This is undoubtedly "THE" forum to use if you are seriously trying to learn something, rather than just a place to post images. I posted a shot at 11;30 on Nov. 18, hoping for input from other photogs dealing with "borderline" trash shots and their opinion of the shot I posted. I was very pleased to get 3 or 4 reply's and respond to them before the "sandman" took charge around 12:30.
Around 5:30 PM Nov. 19, after spending the day working in the yard, I fixed a cup of coffee and checked my E-mail. It was practically a solid line of UHG notices.
 In less than 18 hrs.. my post had 1,205 views and 35 replies. The whole point of this diatribe, is to give credit to the type of people on this forum. Time is valuable to everyone. Time spent helping others is priceless to those being helped. And to me...the people on this forum are priceless. Thank you all. Buddy Bob

You nailed it..WE are this group. The quality of the site depends on the posters here. I will not be liked by many due to my harsh critiques, but hope to add flavor and insight to those with the stomach to pit up with my arrogance.

You are very welcome. The people on this site can make it or break it. If those of us who are more expierenced would rember we were newbies once too and rember to be NICE and POLITE when offering suggestions instead of rude and boorish, we will all be better off. I am constantly amazed at how talented and humble many on this site are. It is a joy to watch someone get ahold of a concept and run with it. Good luck and keep posting.

I somewhat disagree..i know it is a matter of taste, but to be direct, harsh and straight to the point is not only more informative, i feel it adds flavor to the group as long as everyone understands. Just like Simon added flavor to american idol. This is my opinion and will be my style here. I hope it is understood, but most likely will not be. Ihave much to learn and like it when i am bashed. If this group is wanting to be a place to post "pictures" and everyone only find the good out of them, then i will move along. If this turns out to be a place where we can all learn by critiquing other photos, then im in. I learn more from critiquing photos than shooting photos. One must know what is wrong with a photo if they ever expect to capture it right. If you cant critique your own work, you are wasting time and will not get better. Everything happens before the shot and i feel a person would benifit way more from buying a good art composition book or better yet, taking a painting class than spending that money on new gear. I hope everyone understands this about me.

You can give positive and negative comments without being an illmannered boor. There are other websites where the critiques are alot more harsh and rude and maybe you would be happier there. Most of these people here are brand new or only shooting for less than a year. You can always find something positive to say without lieing. I am sure you can add a lot in constructive criticism, however rember people shoot photos because it is fun. very few here are going to become true professional photographers. They do not need the Marine Corps drill instructor approach. I have been a photographer for 43 years and I still learn something new everyday even from newbies. May I suggest you get your self a copy of Dale Carneige"s "How to win friends and influence people" being rude is never aceptable.

I love this site. I haven't posted much as I play on an iPad and I still haven't figured out how to load from this thing.......yet. But everything you all have said is so true. You all talk to each other like you live next door. You have taught me and talked to me. Thanks.

Laurie

You get all kinds of feedback on this site ... which in my opinion makes it worth coming back everyday.
Everybodies opinion isn't going to be what you necessarily wanted to hear ... but then again it's just their opinion. Ya gotta take it all with a grain of salt. Absorb what you need to in order to improve your particular skill level and discard the rest. It's never a personal attack... just different opinions.
Sometimes ya feel like a nut....sometimes ya don't.

Go for it, Rhino!

Some of us "seniors" don't have the time left to hear the sugar-coated comments about our photos. We want to hear it RAW (pun intended). Don't give Carneige a second thought; write your OWN book, "How to Inform Friends and Influence Photography".

Simon varied from a totally hurtful and emotionally-damaging a**hole one week to giving constructive criticism in a gentle manner the next week. I couldn't endure him at all and didn't watch Idol for that very reason - except when Crystal Bowersox was on - because I know her.

Not that most contestants didn't need constructive criticism because they did, but he relished playing the role of a**hole whenever he felt like it and nobody could stop him because he owned the show. Even his co-judges were glad to see him hit the road. So that's not adding flavor, it's adding obnoxious acidic feces.

When Simon saw what HE deemed to be a potential talent he was a good critic. When he saw someone he "felt" was a waste, he told them so and hurt their feelings. Many contestants would have liked to give him the finger or wrap their instrument around his head but they had hopes of success and knew he owned the show. That's not necessary here nor desired.

Personally, I would not be proud to be a Simon clone and would rather poke myself in the scrotum with a sharp grilling fork in shame all day long than to subject newbies and seekers of information to that kind of abuse.

So be nice and critique with manners or you'll start so many off-subject flame wars that it will ruin the community here. This is not a place of "oo's" and "ah's" about posted photos. Criticism and advice is requested most times. You can present negative critique in an educational manner without being obnoxious. There are already three or four on here who don't realize that and that's more than enough.

I agree sinatraman...they CAN give neg and positive remarks without foul launguage and flat out nastiness.....Maybe it makes them feel more manly when they are nasty with their words but honestly it is a turnoff...life is too short for ugliness=they just need to grow up !!
