Does anyone, besides me, remember the dedication of the train museum in Sacramento when they put on the choreographer ballet between the SP 4449engine in its beautiful red, orange and black and the UP Big Boy on the track out by the river?
It was awesome and I will never forget it.

There are only a few things I can recommend Sacramento for, but one of them is the Train Museum. If you're even close, you should stop by. Their collection of toy trains is pretty awesome too. Even if trains aren't a big thing for you, the general history of the west, and the mechanical technology of the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries are well represented.
I'm not what I would consider to be a train buff, yet I can go back there a couple of times a year and always find something to be impressed with.
factoid: During WWII, toy trains were made from cardboard to save the steel for the war, and Lionel made parts for the war effort.
If you're fascinated by things mechanical, the Cycling Hall Of Fame in Davis (not far away) can be a fun too.
