Seriously, did you read the story?
It says something very different from that.

This pope will be good for the church, he truly is a man of the people and seems uncomfortable with the trappings that are bestowed on his position in the church... It seems that he actually understands and lives his calling..

I saw that...and the first thing that came to my mind was: "is he ignorant of what the Roman Catholic church actually TEACHES??"

His words directly contradict their own Canon's on the subject.

It's confusing.

The Jesuit order just released records they heretofore claimed were lost or non-existant showing that they were actively complicit in the sexual molestation of hundreds of children. This after they paid out close to 200 million dollars (note to the tithing faithful: Where do you think they got that money?) to settle claims.

There is rampant corruption in the Catholic Church. The Pope, as appealing as he may be, is yet another old white man more interested in the power and reputation of the institution than the welfare of it's communicants.

LOL... "another old white man" your hatred of the church is duly noted... Just how many catholic hospitals are there in our country? How did hospitals come into existence in our country? How many orphaned children over the years have been placed into homes through the work of catholic charities? How many families have been able to educate their children in catholic schools which offered them quality education at affordable tuition rates instead of having to gamble on the questionable public school systems... How many people have found something that the church offered them in the way of faith that enabled them to make it through another day....

Gnslngr by the standards that you suggest here, we should burn down the church right after we burn down the more egregious offender... our government.

Nyah nah nah nah nah, I'm not going to Hell! I can have a thick juicy steak on Friday, blaspheme on Saturday and surf for porn on Sunday. Monday at work I will ease suffering, comfort the sick and heal the injured and I'm good to go. The Pope said so.

Now I am even more insufferable than ever.

PS Us atheists just want to not be persecuted by the faithful, not join you in Heaven. The above post was written tongue in cheek and is not an attempt to troll anyone.

Ah! do you remember the good old days when it was the ambition of alter boys to enter the priesthood . . .

You are quite correct he is truly a man of the people and that's too bad. The church would be far better off with Pope who was a man of God. His statements directly contradict a massive amount of the Bible he proclaims as the Word of God. So sad.

Whatever Pepper, the bible was written by man some 300 years after Jesus died, manuscript was fought over as it was rather political as to what made it in and what did not make it in... The one thing that has always turned me off about Christianity and the one sole reason that I could never be a Christian is the foolish claim that only through faith in Jesus Christ will your soul be saved! How ridiculous of a statement. Jesus and by extension God is a much more enlightened being than is any human and therefore one would expect him to be beyond being ego driven... Faith in Jesus is not nearly important as were his teachings, and I am certain that were he here he would tell you the same thing. If I impregnated a woman and left her, but left behind rules for my children to live their lives by but was never known to them except till the very end of their lives I showed up to judge them as to how they lived their lives according to my rules, I can only imagine the response I would get as it doesn't seem quite reasonable does it... I suggest to you that God is much more reasonable than any man, he lives at a higher level than man and man's jealousies are not part of what god is.

Sorry for trying to be sarcastic about Christianity American style....obviously didn't work !
Don't talk about me in the 3rd person with your long standing buddies, I'm right here and can talk for myself!

I was born Catholic and agree with what Blurryeyed first said, this pope is a gem ....and has quite a job ahead .....this planet has become quite a nasty place in the name of God !

Take care and don't spill your beer!
