Would like to print on a large metal or canvas surface. 40" by 30". I have never printed on either. I am leaning towards printing on metal because I think it looks cooler. Is there anything I should be aware of when printing on either of these surfaces? The picture is an old brick building on a rainy night with streetlights on so it is rather dark overall. Also if you have a online company you trust to do this and would like to share their name that would be great. Thanks!

Could you please post the pic? Metal and canvas give totally different looks.

Visit the site above, they have printable metal in rolls or sheets depending on your requirements.
I played around with coating my own metal but never was able to get fantastic results. So much easier to purchase product ready to go.
Let me know how it worked out for you.

I have a number of prints on metal, all done by Bay Photo, including some larger than 40 x 30 and some as small as Christmas tree ornaments with the faces of grandkids.

For the bigger ones, I normally buy a sample kit of four 5x7's - one in each of their finishes, and hang those in the same lighting conditions that the final work will be. I've ended up either selling or gifting the 5x7's after the selection process.

Thanks FFrank. I am not looking to do this myself though. I could never handle that. I am wanting to do it and will be paying a professional to do it. I just have never done it on any scale and I am wondering whcih medium would be best for my picture type. It is going to cost several hundred dollars US so b4 I go and do it I was looking for some advice.

Never used metal but have used canvas. When you use canvas, part of the picture is wrapped around the frame so you have to make certain that your file has enough non-critical area on the edges or add a border to extend the edges.

I recently used a company called PIXURU.com and ordered two 16 x 20 photos printed on canvas and let me say I am really impressed with the quality of workmanship, price and short turnaround time. Price for a canvas 16 x 20 is $55.00. Worth looking into.

Costco also has this service. I know they can do canvas, not sure about metal. They seem to be competitive with most I've seen. You can get either wrap around or a black boarder. Some pictures don't lend themselves well to wrap around.

Good shooting

Costco does canvas but not metal. I finally ordered a metal print. It's really luminous - almost glows in the dark. I think certain pictures would look good on it and some wouldn't. It makes bright colors really pop. But if your image isn't tack sharp, it will show that up also. Canvas is better for images that aren't extremely sharp.

I use Photoreflect for printing images that are mounted on canvas. They have that canvas look and feel but retain the luminance of the photographic paper.

Interesting to see how to print on metal. I think I will let the professional printers do that for me. Thanks for this post.

when printing on canvas you will need to sharpen your image a little differently than you would if you were sharpening for a standard print.

I'm not sure about printing on metal, I would think it would be the same sharpening as a standard print since it's a smooth surface.
