I was out of town for most of the weekend. Took many pictures all was well. Monday I went to an area where I have been watching the Eagles and it was wonderful to capture the babies there are two. I will post when I get home. While taking pictures I noticed the view area and menu will not change I can not look at pics or call up the iso basically it just shows what is going on. No buttons pushed seem to work either. The camera was not dropped or wet. Battery is charged all the simple things. I can not figure out how to get in and even take it to factory settings. Has this ever happened to anyone? I got it new last part of January ........any suggestions would be so thankful. Btw it still takes pictures they just don't show up on the screen. The screen does show the iso and so on.

I have a 5100, also. Every now and then I do something that changes what I see in the viewfinder. It takes me forever, it seems, to figure out what I did. Last time I found that if I accidentally hit the up or down button, it changes the information in the viewfinder. Now I'm on to that one. Have you tried that?

I know that I was able to zoom in a view the babies all was good. I am thinking like you said I may have accidentally hit a setting or something that has locked me out some how. The screen is not black. If I have the cap on the lens and camera is on auto it even reads the ISO like 1/3200 and the subject is too dark. The camera works but I can not get into anything or get any buttons to work such as menu, zoom,up,down ect. So that I can work in the view finder. Thank for your input....hoping to figure this out soon...been searching on the net too. :?:

Thank you again you got me thinking I surely must have done something to cause this. Turns out if your nikon freezes there is another way out. By holding done the view button and the menu button at the same time you can cycle it back and restart. There is one other option but this one worked so yippee! I am going to say it was not in the manual It was in a book that one of my friends has about the d5100 Gotta get that for sure very easy to follow. She got it from amazon.

Similar has happened to my daughters D5100...I just removed the battery , replaced it with a fresh one (fully charged) and all was fine. Hope your issue is as easy.

It seems easy now...but at the time I must say if you love your camera you can relate....I wanted to cry...I felt sick to my stomach. Thought about it all day at work what could I have done to cause it? But thank you so much for the support on here...it really helped me feel like just keep working at it and soon I may figure it out....or be heading back to the store to send it out. I had done the who battery thing. It just was not helping . I hope she likes her nikon as much as I do mine. Thanks again.

In my moment of total bliss I didn't write it down she wanted me to borrow it but because I have a daughter graduating this weekend I didn't feel it was right to take it. I will get the author and name today and post for you. Lots of info and ver thick book. Also what a real pal she said you can borrow mine for graduation if you need too! I about cried that is something that not everyone could do. Of course I have other camers that are point and shoot. I would not have done that....but to know she was such a good friend to offer is priceless. ;)

Bradly, I have a D5100 and when things don't work right I reset the camera. That has fixed most of my issues. Sometimes the software does crazy things. Try it.

I kind of figured you would have tried the battery thingy...but ya never know, the simplest fixes are often the ones we tend to over look. Yes, she loves her 5100... we've been a Nikon family for about 40 years....her not so many but when they come free after I upgrade...who's to argue :) Good luck with the fix...don't give up, it's great camera.

Thank you for your reply. This was one of those time I could not navigate anywhere on the camera. Thank goodness they do have a way out by pushing two of the buttons at he same time. I would reset in a heart beat any day instead of dealing with that. Thank you for the support.
