I have over the years have done a lousy job of labeling my pictures. Therefore I have made multiple copies of the same picture. Is there a software program that is able to identify and then let you delete pictures that you have that are the same?

You might take a look at Duplicate Finder

Are you asking to identify images by the image itself or the title or label or something?

To many times I made extra copies of the same group of pictures because I wasn't sure if I did. I simply made way too many copies and want to delete the extra copies of the same picture. Not the pictures that I may have made changes to.

An easy way is to do this.

go to your computer's c drive.

Search "*.jpg" and a bunch of jpgs will come up...let them come.

Then...click the "name" column to sort them by name.

Then just go through and look for duplicate names. Highlight the duplicates and delete them.

Just make sure you save the original. some programs copy the thumbnails also. you wouldn't want to delete the original and save a small thumbnail of the picture

There are different types of duplicates, 5 photos you have taken of the same thing, or resized in software. There are duplicate copies (I'll use Windows as an example) copies of images with a number like (1) at the end Photo(1).JPG. These are images that are duplicated in the OS, or save as was used without a name change.

There are a number of ways / programs to do this. There is a Phthon script called "Dupinator" that can do this, but you need to have a little Phthon knowledge. Google the script for a free copy. This script walks through directories, and groups files by size, then the next pass with run a check on the checksum,, finally it will delete all but the first file in a set of duplicates

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU BACKUP BEFORE RUNNING THIS SCRIPT. I have used it, it works great. But because it is deleting files you should backup first. CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.

Tidy Up is also software that can do this, but it's not free! $20 bucks or something like that.

If you use LR you could also create a new catalog and put everything into one folder and select not to import dups. LR looks at EXIF data to determine duplicates. I believe it will grey them out and you may be able to run the import once, and move to another folder on import. Then go and delete whats left in the original import folder. Again three things you need to do first - BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!

Good luck.
