My wife had donated a tintype photograph of her great grandfather to the local Historical Society back in 1985. While archiving the collection at the Historical Museum she noticed that there is a sticky substance around the edges of the photograph. Does anyone know the best way to clean a tintype? We are afraid to use any chemicals on it and also I've read that water can also damage it if it is of a certain kind. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I believe that is a job for a professional conservator. A tintype is actually a negative on an iron support and thus very fragile.
