I have been intently viewing this forum for over a year with a specific purpose to help me take better photos. Currently I am looking to upgrade from my canon P&S to a mid level DSLR. I have noticed that lot of cameras have technical issues right out of the box. Is there a way that a new buyer like myself can make a $1000 purchase without having to have it fine tuned later? How am I to know that it is the camera and not my lack of knowledge? Thanks to all who help to shed some light on this issue.

I can only speak for myself. In the past three years, I have bought 3 Nikons (I still have all 3), a D3100, D7000, & a D7100. All 3 took fine photos straight from the box, with no teething problems what so ever. I have never had an issue with any of them. I believe other brands are just as reliable.
I disagree that "a lot of cameras have technical issues right out of the box". Maybe a very minute minority did. Sure the D600 had a little hiccup, but it appears to be sorted now. I think you may be unnecessarily concerned about any negative aspects. Buy the brand of your choice & enjoy. Just my 2 cents worth.
No prob here with the new D5100.

I've had great results with my Nikon D3100 for the past two years. It seems that Canon and Nikon are the most popular brands from what I've seen on this forum. You might try renting the model that you intend to buy first and ask the camera dealer if they have any feedback. Consider your end goal with the camera. If you intend to go pro or make money with the camera, consider a camera with a full frame sensor. Anyways, try one and see what you think. Happy shooting!
no problems with my D300 or D800 other than me!!

no issues here with the Canon 40D or my 5D.
I have bought 2 Sonys' and like other people no problems.
Well I also disagree with your post. I find that we UHH are nit pickers. That is not bad. People that are in the know are like that. Now my story is a little different. In about 3 years I have owned about 7 bodies just happen to be Canon. I would shoot many brands, Nikon Sigma, ect. So of those I have had two issues. I might add that I baby by equipment as it is very dear to me. Canon has resolved and warrantied the problems. Canon has followed up to make sure that all is well and that I am satisfied. I believe that is unrealistic to believe that something as techno complex as digital photography will not have some issues and problems. I have heard of great experiences of other photographers. My suggestion do a hands on test look at brads models talk with people. Get some equipment and join us. Show us what you shot! "JR"

You can alleviate a lot of problems by buying a factory refurbished from adorama or b&h. Do look down at these for when the tech do the work on the bodies they ensure that they are working at factory specs. Also a a lot of these are simple returns with nothing wrong with them to begin with.

Nothing is perfect, and most DSLRs work fine out of the box. It's when one or two people get on the web and complain about a problem that the news travels around the world at the speed of light. All of a sudden, we learn that a certain model camera has been electrocuting people.
Many "problems" are caused by user ignorance. Any others are covered by the warranty. I've been shooting since the 1970's and I've never had a problem with any SLR, digital or film.
Hey "T", It's unlikely you'll find a problem with any of the cameras in your price range. These things are generally pretty well sorted out.

Chose your camera well By the time you go to the expense to add on lenses you are pretty much stuck with that brand Unless you go for an advanced point and shoot
I just tested the canon G15 and it was very advanced and shoots Raw Great camera $450 everywhere Most places like Best Buy have a 15 day no question return
So get the camera you choose and road test it
I like Canon myself
