My brother just sent me his Cannon 1D mk ii as he doesn't know how to use it and has more money than talent. So now its mine. Thanks Bro. but I wasn't born a genius either. I was out playing with my new toy yesterday and took some machine gun bursts (Very neat) on my new camera after which time the camera shut down. Nada. She don't work. I took the battery out and reloaded it (Rebooted it.) and it worked again. Some more bursts and budda bing it shut down again. Does anyone known what the problem is? Is it a buffer problem righting to the two sd and cf cards? Any thoughts would be helpful.
Maybe the battery charge is low? If not, try setting the camera back to factory defaults. Start there and see what happens.
If your brother is looking to try anything else and then unload them, I can give a list and my address.

I thought so too but the battery is new and fully charged. I had already reset the settings to the default. Thanks anyway.

Is it possible you have shot a bunch of images & your camera is trying to load them into memory be for allowing you to do this again?

Thanks for the info but I have some experience. I have a Cannon 5D mK ii as well and know how to use it. I have memory cards in. The shutter count is 946. as I said he just bought the camera to try to out toy me several years ago. He never really was interested in photography. I, however, make a rather substantial living from it.

This seems to be the most sensible solution. As I got this camera for a bargain (Free) i put in some older cf cards and a lower memory sd. Which I understand can cause some problems in Cannon.
Well its still got some usefull life left im sure and it sure makes a nice back up to my 5D. So I think i'll keep the old girl around my neck for a while. She still has some pretty curves.
I've taken out the SD card so its not trying to back up in the buffer. This seems to be working while Im sitting at my desk. Saw this trick on a forum. These cannons don;t like to back up from a CF to a SD it tends to make them cranky.

Pardon me, you make a "substantial" living from photography, and you still spell it "cannon"?
If your brother didn't use the camera very much, you should look at upgrading the firmware assuming you can get it work again. There hasn't been an upgrade since Dec-2006, but at that time, the updates served to enable support for SD cards greater than 2 GB. It looks like you might get support only up to 8GB that seems very pedestrian now in 2013 ... Shutter problems seem to be the most common complaint I could find quickly on this body.

Absolutely, If you shooting a bunch of images they will take time to transfer from buffer to memory card and the camera will sometimes stop. Wait for 30 seconds and see what happens. Also, format the memory card again since you may have corrupted it by shutting the camera off during the write procedure. If it isn't that, then your brother was just teasing you with a broken camera.
Canon is the camera and Cannon is the artillery piece you shoot at your enemy. Just thought that you would like to know.
You may wish to update the firmware for this camera:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_1d_mark_ii#ServiceAndSupportClick on Drivers & Support.
Follow the prompts and instructions.
Good luck.
