An interview with ocbeyer

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you
started?
I used to take a lot of pictures back in the film days, with Canon and Olympus SLRs. I like to travel, and travel with my wife and family so back then most of my pictures were more like travelogue shots. My father loved to take slide photos and I was fortunate to get to his "hand me down" camera whenever he upgraded. But I pretty much stopped when digital came around and bought my first DSLR about two years ago.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No training. I like all kinds of shots, mostly nature, animals, macro, landscapes, trains and cars...just haven't gotten around to shooting people. I would love to do some street photography just don't have the nerve. Yet.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Nothing really. I just looked over and saw all this steam and that man immersed in it. It just looked interesting.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Olympus E-3 with the 14-54 lens, hand held. 1/320, F7.1, ISO 100.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Maybe clone or heal out the conductor/engineer fellow in LR, the one leaning over? Or maybe not..

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Well, photography is a part of most all my hobbies - hiking, traveling, going to sports car races. I cook and teach for a living so it even finds a place there. But I think if I had the money I would like to drive in vintage car races.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Yes, at 500px. http://500px.com/ChristianBeyer

An interview with mooseeyes

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I took a photography class in 1957. Also the year that I sold my first photograph. My mother was an artist and encouraged me in that direction; however, you will recall that Russia launched Sputnik in 1957. Since I always did well in math and science, all of a sudden those were the only classes that I was allowed to take. Hence, I ended up with a B.A. in biology and a B.S. in chemistry. But I was not to be derailed, I kept doing art on the side without taking any art classes in high school or college. Later I was to earn my M.F.A., J.D. and Ph.D., all done mostly at night, after I got back from two tours in Viet Nam.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Workshops, seminars, and the like. . .mostly through PPofA. Bryan Peterson is a personal friend, and he and I did a lot of shooting together back in the day, when we both lived in Oregon. I am now retired, no longer maintain a studio, and limit my work to fine art images that I sell in Galleries. In years past, I did just about every kind of photography you can imagine. And, I also have taught a number of photography workshops.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I was walking backwards down the track, the train was coming towards me, my thought was to wait for just the right amount of steam, take the shot, and get the hell out of the way of the train. No rocket science going on here.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I was using my Canon 5D MKII, with one of my favorite Canon EF lens a 28-135mm IS, a little snake charmer of a lens. Because of the overcast day, I set my ISO at 400, turned on the IS on my lens, and as I wanted good depth of field I set the camera to aperture priority for f/11. A quick check showed me that my shutter speed was going to be about 1/125th. . .piece of cake with the IS on. I composed the shot using the lens at 65mm. Now you know as much about this shot as I do. Oh yeah, I did a conversion to black and white, as I thought this image sort of begged for that treatment.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
It was a grey and overcast day (even sprinkled a bit). I would have liked to have had a nice spring sky filled with fluffy white clouds, but alas it was not to be.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Dance naked in the moonlight, with naked cowgirls, how about you? Actually, I also do oil paintings, watercolors, etc. I am almost 70, and my art keeps me going. For a number of years I was a trial attorney and a judge. Retired from law many years ago.
