So, now that we bought our cameras and have some gear.....we are looking at getting some better software. Keep in mind that I do like using Picmonkey...its fun and creative. I have had the advantage of playing with Lightroom1 before and its great! So many options and the creativity that ensue from it is endless. However, I know that they have a student teacher version and the other version. I am not sure if there are any others that are comparable or if Photoshop can hold a candle....so many things to choose from! Want the best for the $ and the options to! Forum guests and members....please give me your advice...Im lost and overwhelmed at the options...and dont know to much about that software. It would only be for Amater phtography...some day maybe I will be someone but for now...it would be used for editing pictures and maybe selling one here or there...not for magazines and the big times! ;0) lol

In my opinion, it's hard to beat LightRoom, in any version. You will eventually have enough photos that you have taken that you will need some way to catalog all of them. LightRoom does that, and may very well be the best at doing that. But, for editing your photos, LightRoom can do probably 80-90% of the edits you'll want to do.

Another point is that you will likely never outgrow the Adobe tools, as they strive diligently to keep abreast of new technology presented by the camera manufacturers. Technology doesn't stand still, and if you intend to pursue photography for years to come, it's important to have a toolset that grows with you.

Yes, Adobe offers a student version of their software, and if you qualify for the purchase, it is a major savings. Since I don't qualify, I've not pursued it, but I believe you have to submit substantiating documentation to prove your student status.

I truly enjoy the combination of Lightroom, Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements. It is hard to explain in a sentence or two, but they are very different. In Lightroom it is easier and more effictive if the goal is to adjust a group of photos for light and exposure. For example, you want to improve and distribute photos from a Grand Canyon vacation. In Photoshop Elements is easier and more effective at working on single photos where there are objectionable objects. For example, there are power line wires slicing an historic temple in two and you want to remove the power lines.

If I was on a tight budget, I would pick Photoshop Elements and buy it when it is on sale.

Elements does come with "Organizer", a separate but connected, program that can be used to catalog your photos in ways similar to Lightroom.

I agree with everything you said except if I could have only one it would be Lightroom and would add PSE when I could. ;)

If the truth be known, I started my Adobe trip 3 years ago with PrE, then added LR, then PSE. Beyond that I've added a few plugins from Topaz and then the Nik suite when the price plummeted a couple months ago.

I've heard of one usable "pro" tool in PS that I don't have. Other than that, I have about $350 into an amazing set of software that only gets better as I study it harder. I do not feel software limited in any way.

I have about an additional $100 in training from lynda.com and books from Scott Kelby.

I used to have a wet darkroom. I could do about a picture an hour. Color was even slower.

I'm in photo/video hog heaven!

I have Corel Paint Shop Pro, Picture It {no longer manufactured)Gimp, Raw Therapee, Nikon software, Canon Software, and Lightroom 4 plus the Beta Lightroom 5 which isn't out yet. For me (not a professional) the most useful is either Lightroom or Corel. I sometimes use them together. I don't like Gimp-too hard for me and too much like Photoshop. I took classes on Photoshop and decided it was just too difficult for everyday use. The rest of my software is never touched-just taking up space on my computer.

I had upgraded from LR2 to LR3 some time ago. Any reason to upgrade to LR4? Any real benefits?

Could be either or both- depends on how you set PSE up on your computer. Most setup to save on their computers internal drive and one or more connected desktop hard drives. Others use the cloud or some or a combination of all of the above. ;)

There are some real improvements in the Develop module.
Noise reduction is a whole lot better. It really was not good in LR3.
Many of the slider' adjustments are not as rough/drastic on image changes, especially exposure and contrast.
Lens correction is expanded and more controls for chromatic aberration.
