While driving home tonight I noticed some Christmas lights are already up!
This got me to thinking and wondering how to be creative when photographing them. Any suggestions/examples?

Two things to consider. You are photographing the lights themselves so the automatic exposure is probably going to wash them out. Use your exposure compensation to expose a stop or so less than the meter. Second, since you're exposing for the lights the rest of the world will be very dark so exposing before it's completely dark will add atmosphere to the shots.
the best time to photograph them is BEFORE dark, twilight (the golden hour(s)). take the pictures toward the setting sun and they should come out pretty good. I realize that it is a short period of time, but it is the best time.

Rhino, could you expand on what you mean since questions are posed here to receive suggestions and help. Not all would have the knowledge or expertise to know what that means. Thanks.
Good call robert! The Strobist is one of my favorite website. For flash photography, this is the site to go to.
Marvelous article, thanks for sharing. When you think abuot it, it makes perfect sense. Have added the site to favorites on computer for future reference. - Judy
The article from Strobist was very helpful, thank you. Kelly

Thanks, Robert. That is one of the best articles on night photography I've ever read.
Advice on shooting indoor Christmas trees? I have tried draggin the shutter which seems to help.
Having a tripod in the trunk of your car might come in handy as well.

If your into abstracts, drink a lot of coffee and don't use a tripod. LOL

Ya mean like this? 10-22mm lens, ISO 100, f/4.5, 5 second exposure. EXIF info is attached to original. Tripod, of course. Not real creative, but my neighbor just wanted a normal picture of his efforts.
I LOVE doing swipes and swirls.......my family thinks I'm out of my mind, but too bad for them.....
