I've already decided on the Canon 70-200 2.8L non-IS, but now my challenge is to actually make the leap. I've found one locally (private seller) that looks to be in excellent condition, but I'm not sure if it's a fair price. I've searched the web, but the prices seem to be across the board. I would really appreciate any advice/insight from UH community (you folks have kept me from making some big mistakes over the years). Here are the details:

$950
Canon 70-200 2.8L non-IS
Box, Lens, and Tripod Mount
Date code: uz1025 (Oct 2011 manufacture date I believe)
Serial/UPC #: 2569a004[aa] or [91]2569a004[92]aa00318894

Thanks!!

Yes, that is about right. The IS model is going for around $1500.
Check the used dept at B & H.

You may have seen B&H has an June-2013 instant savings on a new copy knocking the price down to $1299. The $950 listing seems to be near the middle of going prices for a used model. (The used sellers don't get a notification from Canon to drop the price ...) Without tax and shipping, it's a fair price by my measure.

Dano, I think that's the SAC model. It's made for Shooting Around Corners, or at least it looks that way to me!
Have you checked for refurbs on Canon's site?
Good luck

Great point SharpShooter about canon referbs, I hadn't thought of that. Even though they're currently out of stock, they still list the prices which really helps. And both B&H and KEH is where I've been looking, but they seem to range from about $850 all the way up to full price. That's why I really appreciate your input. Thanks!!

PS - I also thought it sounded like a decent deal since the SAC models are so hard to find in the states.

Dano, they go in and out of stock at Canon if you are not in a hurry. They took my contact info once and called me when a camera came into stock, before it hit the website. Sometimes stock comes and goes before its listed in-stock. Most of my equipment has been refurbs from the Canon site. Good luck

Canon usually has their reburbs at around $985. I don't know if they currently have any in stock.

I have to agree, unless it is photo distortion the lens does appear to off centerline. Hope he put's it on his camera before the purchase.

This lens holds it's price extremely well. Ten months ago, after many weeks of research, I finally purchased one on eBay that was like new with original box, carrying case and actually all the original items included for $1050. It has been excellent and I have no regrets. I think $950 is a good price for one in excellent condition.

I would bite your arm off for that price. That's my next lens but in UK, new, they are $1500 (£950) for the non IS model. If you don't want it, please send me the seller's details.

you can use the advanced search tool on ebay and select only auctions/sales that have completed, then you can see what that lens is selling for.

I've already decided on the Canon 70-200 2.8L non-... (show quote)

I saw one for $900 and one for $800 on CL just now. I'd offer the person $850 and see if they take it.

Thanks guys! I completely forgot to search CL beyond my area, and eBay history as well. Great info!

I agree. I will say that I have totally enjoyed mine. I think that B&H would be a perfect place to check. They might even offer the lens with a warranty. Although....that one appears to be in good shape and well cared for. But, I am sure B&H would allow you some kind of a trial period. They are great to deal with.
