Just found an article in a recent science magazine on Jumping spiders here in Australia. There are 250 described species throughout Australia. I am still looking for just one.????
Interesting article, those of UHH s that share those great pics with us will probably already know that jumpers are very clever.
Their level of intelligence and capacity to learn rivals a cats.
They can leap up to 40 times there body length to catch prey or avoid being prey. They have the best eyesight of all spiders.
They are clever hunters, using stealth and cunning to adapt
their method of attack according to their prey.Scientists have discovered jumpers usually plan ahead and strategise the best
approach to their prey [ sneaky eh. ] hope to meet one soon .

FYI I found most of my jumpers around man made structures. Houses and out buildings are a good place to look, especially around night lights. An abundance of food is required as they don't build webs. Wooden Docks or buildings with night lights around lakes is another good source.

Keep looking... I was beginning to think they didn't live in the rainy, cool Portland. They do seem to like warmer (80s+) temperatures and as Martin mentioned, man-made structure.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I happen to think they are pretty darn cute-- so I put one of mine on my work computer as a screen saver. I have dual, wide-screen monitors. A co-worker saw it and shuddered and said "Ewwww! What the <expletive> is that??!!"

I never thought I would think of a spider as cute , but macro has opened their tiny world to me and yes I think they are cute.
Its amazing how much we dont see in the world around us.A short time ago I would not have spent an afternoon chasing bees around the garden, or searching the wood shed for spiders.
Thanks LoneRangeFinder

I saw a big (very big) jumping spider yesterday(did not have a camera with me). I have never seen one like this before, it was all black, well it had just a little red on it too and it was about an inch in length.

Most likely a Bold Jumper (Phidippus audax)
