Manual Nikkor 55-mm macro lens + Nikon PK-13 extension tube.
I am definitely going to need a 4way rail focusing assist. These were hand held because I really wanted to try the extension tube that came in the mail today. First two images are uncropped. The last image is cropped. The spider (don't know what kind it is) was really tiny.

I neglected to "save image" for download. I can re post if there is any interest.
At this magnification, available light often results in very narrow DoF. Your focus rail will assist in longer shutter duration for deeper DoF.
When I shot these, there was lots of sun available in the yard. From your post, I assume that using supplemental lighting would increase DoF? Did I understand this correctly? Thanks.

Absolutely. Take a look at the Macro Equipment Set-Up thread at
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html . You will see that 90% of UHH macro-photographers use speedlight illumination, quite close to subject, which provides substantial increase of light, allowing a decrease in aperture, resulting in an increase in DoF. With speedlight illumination, I typically shoot at ISO 400, 1/200-sec at f/16 to f/22.
Thank you for the explanation and the link to all those set ups. Gives me lots to think about. I had misunderstood your post. I was wondering how light would change the dof, but it makes perfect sense that the light is what makes f/16 & f/22 possible. I was shooting at f/5.6 & f/8 with the natural light, and did not have that much DoF. It also makes sense to me now, that the lens and camera block lots of the natural light when you are focusing down to about .9 inches as I am with that 55mm. Thank you for all your help.
The focus rail (I have two) would help in a studio environment, but out in the field, even the slightest breeze moves your subject & thus the point of focus goes in & out of focus...I concur with Douglass. Additional lighting is a godsend...
Thanks for the information Scott. Do you, then, hand hold your camera when you are in the field?
Yes....I have several ring lights & other lighting options....
Thanks. Looks like I'll be looking into some lighting options. Funny how one thing leads to the next...and there is always....oh, and if you were thinking you wanted to do this...then you should probably also think about getting one of these. Nature of the hobby I suppose. lol
