My D 7000 uses two sd cards my D800 uses an sd slot and a slot for a cf card. Is there an advantage to the cf card over the sd card?
Interesting article.
The whole site has great info.
<<<4. "CompactFlash cards are 'professional' and more durable than SD cards."
False. CompactFlash was the first form factor to the market and was the mainstay in digital photography for about 5 years. SD cards were developed to allow more compact camera designs, but they are actually more durable than CompactFlash cards because they are waterproof, shockproof, magnet- and x-ray proof.>>>
One biggie with our stable of loaner cameras at the university where I work: SD cards aren't prone to damaging the contacts in the camera due to improper insertion of a CF card. Try to put a CF card in incorrectly and you bend the pins inside ($200 & 2 weeks from Canon)I had a shipping box dedicated to sending cameras off for repair.

+1 on GoofyNewfie - CF were around first, but do have the built-in potential for pin bending. SD cards generally do no, as they have flat plane contacts rather than pins & slots like CF cards.
The "professional" tag came about only because nearly all P&S camera bodies take SD cards, whereas some larger DSLRs took CF cards when they first came out. Now, I don't think there are ANY DSLRs that have ONLY a CF slot - the 5D/III has both, the 6D is SD only. I think the 50D was the last large Canon to take ONLY CF cards...
What do you all think of the sd adapters

Slower yet! It is all about speed.

Slow and they consume more battery power. Most of them work but not very well. I have a couple of them that I used rarely, now they just take up space in a box. It is best to buy the proper card for the job. Most of the CF to SD adapters are Type II which happen to be a slight bit thicker that the Type I. Memory cards are really quite reasonably priced these days.

The 7D only takes CF cards. I don't think you could put a card in wrong on the 7D unless you forced it. The only problem I have ever had with CF cards was with cheap card readers. Sense I bought a Sandisk card reader I have not had any problems.

My 1dx only takes cf cards... the 5D3 takes both, so I take advantage of the sd card with that body

Students will find a way.

Goofy,
I guess but they will have to work at it, LOL! I just tried. The card will go in about a 1/4 of the way before you hit resistance. From there on you would have to really force it. Before you hit the pins you have to get the card in more than 3/4 of the way.
In other words, you have to be an idiot to push the card in far enough to hit the pins. Guess that is why I didn't go to college, I wasn't stupid enough.

Sometimes I wonder myself...
And these are grad school students.

I was! Two weeks after I got my 7D I changed the CF card for the first time. I got an error message, took it in to a Canon center, and paid $450 to have a new pin strip inserted. I still swear that I didn't push hard but it was a lesson learned (and I have a post-graduate degree.)

Our future. Makes me worry a little! Could be why so many of them can't get jobs? I use to get some of them as apprentices at work. I use to refer to some of them as “intelligent idiots”. How can some of them graduate and have no common sense?
