Question on flash accessories?

Hello, I'm new to this site. I'm retired and do photography as a hobby. And of course I have a question. I have a 50D and a 580 EXII that fires perfectly on the camera w/o fail, but when I use either the Canon remote shoe mount cord and/or a third party shoe mount cord, it fires intermittently or when it wants to. I can't believe that both the cords are defective since they are both new. Is their some setting in the camera and/or the flash that needs adjusting or... maybe they are defective

The photo is from western Minnesota...

I have several cords and they have worked fine (2 footers). They have worked very well with the flash flip bracket. I assume you are tightening the connections.

I have had an intermittent problem when stretching the cord out too far (tight). I don't know what that problem was. I quit stretching "too far".

I believe I have seen some in the B&H catalog that where longer and may consider one of those.

The Canon is 4' and the other is 20'. Today neither seems to be working...

I've had cords go bad on me for no apparent reason at the most inopportune times with the flash acting as if possessed. So, it wouldn't surprise me if both cords were bad. I always carry a spare. That has saved me more often than having a spare set of batteries.
Check to see if the contacts on the cord are mating properly to the hot shoe of the camera and is securely attached....more than once I have forgotten to tighten or properly seat that little bugger. Hope you won't go mad before finding a solution

I have similar equipment and experienced the same problem with both the Canon Elan II, Digital Rebel and 60D with two of their flashes. I suspect they designed or manufactured the equipment with this problem built-in. However, in my case, it happens when the flash is on the camera. I rarely take it off.

Try Googling the problem.

On the cord where the flash mounts, is the plate with the contacts. By taking a very small flat tipped screwdriver, at the front you can carefully lift the plate up and slide it off. Under the plate are tiny screws that you can tighten. I have had this problem with my canon cord, and it is fixable. I have since purchased an after market cord and never had the problem since. I think Canon has a quality control issue here. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Thinking back, the cords that went south on me were all genuine Canon. Can't remember having a problem with the knockoffs.
