Here in Brazil we have this big fruit tree in our yard full of fruit. It is very sweet (I am a diabetic and can't eat it). The Brazilians call it "ameixa" pronounced "ameisha" which is a plum. It dosen't look like any plum I have ever seen. I never see it in the fruit markets.
I don't know what kind of fruit it is. The birds love it.

They look like loquats to me... My Grandmother had a huge loquat tree in her yard. They are DELICIOUS! (sorry you are unable to eat them)

I looked at the site and I think you are right. I've never seen them before. Thanks for looking.

They are loquats and they are delicious. I don't believe they are as sugar laden as you think.

one cup of loquat flesh is only 18 carbs, and the estimated glycemic load is only 4.

The leaves can be made into a tea and actually helps stabilize your sugar levels by producing 2 chemicals that increase insulin production in the body.

•Rich in soluble fiber, due to pectin, which is a soluble dietary fiber found in citrus fruits. Pectin binds to cholesterol in the stomach and slows glucose absorption by trapping carbohydrates. Pectin reduces cholesterol levels.
•Pectin in loquats also helps retain moisture in the colon and protects it from binding to toxic chemicals.
•High in antioxidants. The riper they are, the higher the concentration of antioxidants.
•High amount of Vitamin A (2276 IU per cup)

•High in potassium and some vitamin B-complexes
•Good source of minerals including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium.
•Low Glycemic Load Index of 4

The loquat is indigenous to China and Japan and is part of the rose family.

As a diabetic myself, I find that fresh fruits for the most part are a great part of my diet. Eating the whole fruit as opposed to just the juice is the key.

You are lucky to have easy access to this fruit, as it does not ship well, so you don't see it in stores very often.

Definitely Loquats, they are delicious. We have them here in Australia, the trees can become quite large
