Help with lens decision

Just new to photography and doing a diploma course. Having good success so far. I have a Canon EOS 550D and would like a zoom lens as the kit lens does not have much of a zoom. I believe Sigma lenses are Canon compatible, but for a beginner I would like to know what size I should be buying without it costing an arm and a leg. I have a budget of around £270. I know it depends on what I am trying to do with the camera but I do like taking scenic photos of historic buildings etc and trying to get close up to towers and clocks etc is something I need the zoom for. If it is was possible to have a lens where I do not have to keep changing lenses over then that would be great Any helpful suggestions would be welcome

Thank you

Where in the UK are you

For buildings I would go for this (Architecture)

http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Used/Canon-EF-20-35mm-f3.5-4.5-USM-_72509.html

OK, I know you and others will say, not as wide as 10/15mm BUT, I use this day in day out, especially for weddings, it is a FF lens with quality results.

However if you want W/A and tele in one then look no further

You won't get IS, but the lens is a great all rounder

Before people say yes but not a great lens, it is £120 and for THAT price...

Hi

Thanks for all your help, I am in Fife Scotland. Both the recommended lenses are what I am looking for so it will be the question of which one now.

Thanks again for your great support and help

Sigma offers two great choices:
Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro and the regular, both are fantastic walk-around lenses.

I got a18-200 Efs lens when I bought my 60d. It's image stabilized and has been a great lens. It just won't work on my new 6d(full frame) I've seen them on sale for 450-500 recently(that's dollars) I've bought several lens used from folks getting too old to pack around a full size SLR. They liked the money and I got a fair deal.

The Tamron is on sale right now. I have this lens and it is a very good one. For the price I don't think you can go wrong. Good luck and welcome to UHH.

I will start with "I have never used or tried Tamron so I don't know them and have nothing against them but...."

In tests they rarely come close to Sigma
