And you will continue to think, ALL cameras are a compromise, DO NOT buy a camera until you know WHAT you want it for.
Pentax are exceedingly good, as are Canon and Nikon, but would you buy a car just because you liked the colour and shape.
Decide what photography you want to do, will do and ask the question again.
thank you for the opinion of pentax
will do as suggest. most of my photo are from zoo - around the garden -local stuff or I photograph luncheons/events for a group I belong to. not looking to get in to lighting/studio stuff and don't care about video capacity love my OM-2
do a lot of different stuff - master of none
hope this helps
oh and need to keep it under $1,000

Then my personal opinion is.
1. Get a good pre owned camera, many many here buy pre owned so do I, you get much more for the money.
2. Pentax, Canon, Nikon, any one is fine, I do like Pentax BUT I think a Canon 60D should be well within your range and believe me will you love it
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/832085-REF/Canon_EOS_60D_Digital_SLR.htmlAnd that is at the top of your price range
thank you so much - for the help ( and the research) - will try it on for size tomorrow

Also handle each camera for feel and ease of use, dependent on the size of your hands etc... You may prefer the feel and use of a particular brand. Weigh that with what JR stated.

I have a Pentax K20D that I like a great deal. Shutterbug magazine has a review of the K30 this month. The lens line up is more limited but some of the glass is really amazing. Good luck with your decision.
my biggest concern about the pentax is there is no "shop' that carries them - may be if someone in so caifornia is willing to let me put my hands on one ......

You are right that it is getting harder to find a shop that carries them. I bought my K5 from Creve Coeur Camera here in St. Louis. they carry a good supply of the Pentax cameras, lenses, flashes, etc. Good service from knowledgeable people. Their prices seem to match B&H. they will lend you a tripod and let you put your own memory card in the camera and shoot from the doorway to see what it will do and how it handles.
