i,am thinking about getting a sigma 400mm or maybe a 500mm anyone on the site use either and can you give me any info on these lenses been on review site,s you get a different review off different site.s i would just like an honest review from a user. prices over here are £700 to £800. thanks jimmy

Get the 150-500 jamm, it's a great lens. You might find the best price this side of the pond is procamera shop. They give an extra 3% discount when you arrange a direct bank transfer too.

I have and use the 150 to 500 and have no complaints. It is slower lens and subsequently it teaches everything you want to know about your ISO, Aperature and shutter speed settings. I got mine from amazon and the retailer was 47th street photo. $1100 USD

Do you mean 400/500mm or a zoom.
All the shots on my site of surf are with 120-400 AND 150-500
I would use nothing else

Hi Jamm
I have the 150 - 500. Its great value for money.
For wildlife there are some downsides - Its soft at the very end of the range and when the light isnt great - you have to up the ISO and then you run into noise. But as I first said its great VFM and when taken to sunnier brighter conditions its fine. Its a heavy lens - a monopod is essential for overcast days. Get a good quality UV filter for protection - the sigma one is best as its designed to go with the lens - otherwise you will compound its weaknesses.
I have now bought a Canon 100-400 - I will keep the sigma but if I could have gone for the extra expense - I would have bought this first. If this is all your budget will stretch to then go for its because its a great lens for this price. Hope this helps - you can see some of my bird images taken with the Sigma and a Canon 60d on this site.

If you are on Canon, The 300 F4 L W 1.4X is a great lens. So is the 400 F5.6 L, the 70-200 F2.8 IS II W/2X, and the 100-400 5.6L. Personally, I use a Sigma EX 100-300 F4 W/1.4X also a GREAT lens - now discontinued and discounted or must find used. The Sigma you can use with Nikons. I recommend Tamron SP tele converters.

I use it almost entirely hand held for all my birds and birds in flight shots. I find a tripod is far too slow, especially for the birds in flight stuff. Have won several competitions with shots taken using this lens and it cost me $950AUD, I got it a bit cheaper as my shop gives me a good discount, the retail is usually $1100AUD...
I use it on my D90...
The first pic was the full frame shot at 500mm...the duck was a loooong way off ...the second pic shows the cropped version...this is the shot that won me my Sigma 150 macro in a National Sigma Corporation Photography comp...
The final image was filtered to remove some ISO noise and a minor sharpen, but no more than I would do with any of my Nikkor lenses.
The alternative I looked at was the Nikkor 400mm prime lens but priced at around $8,000AUD, the Sigma got the nod...
