I am using a manual Yongnuo 560 II flash on my SX50. Will someone who has experience with the SX50 please explain why it will not flash in all modes? I know there must be a simple answer but the manual is ?????

+1 you need a flash that works with the camera
Would that have to be an expensive Cannon flash?

Blimy no.
Well that proved more difficult than I thought.
I called Jessops, the newly open chain here, and "they had NO idea" what flash worked.
Duh...........
According to them ALL the range of speedlights work

I've been happy with the 270EX. As I understand it, Canon made it primarily for the G and SX series cameras, where a large flash might throw the weight off and make it hard to hand hold. (It also works with all of the EOS SLRs, too, of course.) It's very light and fits easily in my bag. It also fits in my pants pocket and would fit into most purses. I like the fact that it tilts--though only in landscape format--so you can bounce it off the ceiling. I bought it from B&H, along with a diffuser made by Zeikos that cost less than $10. The larger models in the Speedlight line have more bells and whistles, of course. The primary selling point here is size and weight.

I have used the 270EX II have been very pleased with the results. I actually tried my 580EX II but it felt awkward with the flash being bigger than the camera.

I also just purchased the 560 II flash for my SX50 and it will only work when I have it in AUTO mode. I read somewhere where some UHH members use it also and said how easy it was to use in manual but can't find it now. Hope someone can help as it is a great flash for the money. Makes a great slave too but I have never needed a slave. (Except in the kitchen)

Okay, just went through exactly the same scenario. I found that you need a flash that has E-TTL, so I sent mine back and ordered a 468 which is about $20 more but is E-TTL. I should get mine on Friday, and will let you know if it works on my SX50.
