lonnieo has graciously volunteered their WPC 1318 - Breakfast entry for critique and analysis to find out what they could have done to make it better. Be nice, but be honest as this will help everyone with their craft. Thank you lonnieo and thank you everyone!

This Monarch Butterfly decided he wanted to share my breakfast!

A little more light maybe. Could you have gotten the butterfly to turn around?

I think the photo is one of those "snaps" that represent a delightful moment and experience but with no time to compose or focus, it falls short for a contest. It looks like the orange is in a bit more focus than the butterfly (I would have preferred the other way) and chair + greenery in upper right are distracting.

Agreed. I would have also cleaned up the leftover breakfast remnants on the plate as they add nothing and are distracting.

It happened very fast and I just wanted to get the photo before he left, I know less than nothing about "Cleaning up the back ground". If any one would like to show me how and with what, I would be forever grateful.

Hello from another Oregon retired photo person. You have a treat coming once you learn a little about photo editing. You can make distracting details like the remains of breakfast disappear quite easily.

Personally, I like Adobe Photoshop Elements. It does most of what the full version of Photoshop can do, but it's easier to use and cheaper. Version 11 is really good. Version 12 just came out and Costco might have it on sale for around $50 next month, but not yet. Version 12 has a tool called "content aware move." I haven't used that tool yet, but I've seen it demonstrated. You might even be able to get your butterfly to turn around.

There are all kinds of video and You Tube tutorials to help with learning the program. Rome wasn't built in a day, but you can learn as you go. There is a spot healing brush, and a clone stamp where you can duplicate what you want to cover up things you don't want. You can brighten, intensify colors, darken, whatever you feel you need to do.

Best regards,
Hope White
